First published in 1963, this book by Raul Morin, who served in the 79th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, was the first book to chronicle in detail the heroics of the Mexican-American soldier during World War II and Korea. It also provides information about the Chicano Medal of Honor recipients during these wars.
The book is a tribute to all American fighting men, "be they white, red, black, yellow, or brown. We feel just as proud of the Colin Kellys, the Dobbie Millers, and the Sadio Munemoris as we are of the Martinez', Garcias and Rodriguez'."

About the Author

Raul Morin (July 26, 1913 - May 4, 1967) was a Mexican-American historian, teacher, WWII veteran and author.
Born in Lockhart, Texas, he lived in nearby Sweetwater, San Marcos and San Antonio and moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s, where he married and started a family.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and ended up serving with the 79th Infantry Regiment in Europe. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and sent back to the United States to recover.
From his convalescent ward in Letterman General Hospital and later, DeWitt Clinton Hospital, Raul reflected on his wartime experiences and decided to document all cases of valor among Mexican-American soldiers, who were noticeably absent from the novels and movies generated after the war, and which would eventually be immortalised in his widely acclaimed 1963 book, Among the Valiant.
Morin's interests were diverse and besides successfully conducting a sign service in Los Angeles he was concerned with civic and social issues. He spoke out on causes involving the community and took an active part in political campaigns.
He was a charter member of the VFW Post 4696 and The Eugene A. Obregon Post in East Los Angeles, the Mexican American Political Association, the ELA Democratic Club, and was instrumental in bringing the first chapter of the American GI Forum to Los Angeles.
Raul Morin passed away in May of 1967 at the age of 53.
