He covers a broad span of topics, ranging from the ionic basic of resting and action potentials to the astounding computational abilities of insect brains. His well-written and occasionally humorous prose often reads more like a mystery novel than a textbook. The 'mysteries' start as 'gee whiz' behavior stories, which are unraveled by explaining their underlying biochemical, ionic, and synaptic mechanisms...
This will be a good introduction to excite undergraduate students into further neuroscience exploration, and to inspire and initiate graduate students into an evolutionary and neuroethological perspective, as well as its experimental paradigms. I did not learn many new facts by reading this book, but I am able to think more broadly about the origin, structure, and function of nervous systems.
