Description: This is an overview of key concepts that comprise the curriculum of the new part one basic examination of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). A separate volume covers topics in part two of the ABA certification examination.
Purpose: It is intended as the main source of preparation for the basic part one examination. The effectiveness of the book will be tested soon. The objectives are worthy, but only time will tell if they are successfully met.
Audience: The book is written for anesthesia residents, but many practicing anesthesiologists will find it useful when preparing for MOCA certification exam.
Features: The 199 chapters are grouped into four sections. Section one covers basic science topics including physics, anesthesia machines, ventilators, anesthesia monitors, and the pharmacology of anesthesia drugs. Section two reviews major anesthetic techniques like regional anesthesia, general anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia techniques, as well as common issues/complications related to them. Section three on organ physiology covers CNS physiology, cardiac physiology, pain pathways, transfusion physiology, and inotropic pharmacology. Section four covers special topics like patient safety, ethical issues, and physician impairment. The book is basically a compilation of 199 key words, each of which is covered in 2-3 pages. The format is designed to provide information at a quick glance, rather than in-depth discussions of topics, but all the relevant facts are presented for each topic. The book is well illustrated with plenty of tables and bullet points.
Assessment: There are plenty of books available for quick review, but this is the first one based on the new examination format. Residents wishing to refresh their basic knowledge before the basic anesthesia exam will find this useful.
