Overview

Ashton Fenwick was raised to be the bastard older brother--the charming, happy bastard older brother. Now, an earldom has been foisted upon him, and his family urgently needs him to find and marry the right countess. With charm at the ready, Ashton is prepared to go wife-hunting during the London social Season, but it's the forthright landlady at Ashton's lodging house who catches his eye.

Matilda Bryce bakes delicious apple tarts and does not suffer titled fools, even as she looks after street urchins and does what she can to help Ashton prepare for the challenges before him. Ashton soon realizes that somebody is out to destroy Matilda's happiness, and if he offers to make an honest countess of her, she could well flee. He's found the woman for him, though, and will risk all to free Matilda from her past.

The hero, Ashton, is truly that, and the heroine, Matilda, is redoubtable as well as beautiful, but Helen steals the story! Wonderful characterizations blended with authentic persons and places, along with much loved friends from related stories, are all appreciated. Plenty of love and adventure, mixed with a few anxious moments and leavening humor, make for a lovely tale.

Confused about how the earldom is inherited? First, the question of the hero obtaining the title, the stepson acquiring it, ... the dastardly uncle earl has “lost” the title. Yet, the story was predictable.

What a fun read. I liked both Maggie and Ashton. Both were adults; honest with themselves and each other. Good plot and a fine ending.

Ashton: Lord of Truth by Grace Burrowes is an awesome historical romance. This book is well-written and full of lovable, amazing characters. I especially loved Helen. What a little spitfire. Ashton and Matilda's story is full of drama, suspense, action and spice. Best of all though was the humor. I enjoyed reading Ashton: Lord of Truth and look forward to my next book by Grace Burrowes. Ashton: Lord of Truth is book 13 of the Lonely Lords Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
