Description: This lavishly illustrated textbook of general surgery operative techniques uses clear, full-color drawings to supplement lucid, clear, succinct text. Both simple procedures and complex operations are covered.
Purpose: The English-language version of an international publication, this book is "directed toward presenting the most common 16 general and 150 special operations of everyday surgical practice to surgeons in training, to students, as well as to qualified surgeons." The emphasis throughout is on general surgery. The authors acknowledge that there are many fine specialty texts, but note that an atlas such as this, designed to serve trainees as well as surgeons in training, is valuable indeed.
Audience: It is intended primarily for general surgeons in training. Beautifully clear introductory chapters teach trainees the basic principles of tissue handling and emphasize safe practices related to bedside and ICU procedures. Later chapters deal with more complex operations, including laparoscopic procedures and operations for trauma.
Features: After the introductory section, the book is divided into the usual anatomic areas. Within each area both simple and highly complex operations are illustrated, each with its own chapter. Within each chapter, bulleted lists enumerate indications, risks, steps, complications, etc. Illustrations are both black and white and color, and all are clear, lucid, and exceptionally well done.
Assessment: This is an excellent book that will be of value to trainee surgeons. It covers not only the usual general surgical procedures, but also some vascular, pediatric surgical, and other specialty procedures. It is a book that trainees can use from their very first year through to the end, and continue to use for reference thereafter.
