Overview

This Atlas is designed to illustrate different techniques on how to perform successful parathyroidectomy by using traditional four gland exploration approach and minimally invasive approaches, such as the open minimally invasive approach, video-assisted approach, back-door approach, transoral endoscopic parathyroidectomy approach (TOEPVA), and endoscopic lateral parathyroidectomy approach. It illustrates removal of a right and left, and superior and inferior parathyroid glands. Written by renowned endocrine surgeons and experts in the field, each chapter begins with a case description that defines the main aspect of surgery. Each picture, which is taken intraoperatively, is accompanied by corresponding drawings for easier understanding of the anatomical structures and steps of the procedure. In addition, most of the authors provided a video of the same case as it is depicted in the chapter. The Atlas also gives some common pitfalls of the procedure in an effort to avoid complications and improve patient outcomes.

Description: This beautifully illustrated atlas carefully describes the steps in doing parathyroidectomy, as approached by 13 highly experienced surgeons who are leaders in their field. It begins with traditional open four-gland exploration and ends with a transoral endoscopic approach. The illustrations consist of excellent-quality operative photographs, paired with color illustrations, which, by simplifying the image, make it easier to see the details in the photograph. Videos accompany selected chapters of the ebook, which is a different purchase. This review refers to the printed copy only.
Purpose: The book "is designed to illustrate different techniques on how to perform successful parathyroidectomy by using different approaches." The author hopes "this atlas will provide an indispensable source of knowledge to all surgeons, those who just started their career and those who are in the more advanced stages of their practice and are learning new techniques of parathyroidectomy." These are worthy objectives, which the book amply meets.
Audience: The book is written for surgeons who routinely perform parathyroidectomy - that is, endocrine surgeons (who might consult it for information about advanced minimally invasive techniques), surgical oncologists who include endocrine surgery in their practice, and subspecialty trainees seeking an authoritative reference to a wide range of surgical approaches. The book definitely meets the needs of its intended audience. The author and contributors are all credible authorities in their field.
Features: The first chapter, on traditional four-gland open exploration, should be read by all general surgery residents as well as endocrine surgeons. It is a model of clarity and thoroughness. From there, three more chapters cover variations on this theme (open exploration of all four glands). The book then segues naturally into targeted open approaches that are used when the site of the adenoma is presumed to be known from localization studies. Subsequent chapters cover variations on this theme, including use of video assistance. Chapter 11 provides an excellent, detailed description of the "back door" approach (that is, approaching through virgin territory in a previously-operated field. The rest of the book is devoted to endoscopic techniques.
Assessment: This is a high-quality book that will be of use to trainees (in the specialty field) as well as fully trained surgeons who wish to add new techniques to their operative repertoire. It is clearly written and well-illustrated.
