Overview

This surgical atlas illustrates the various successful thyroid surgery techniques of world-renowned surgeons. Some approaches presented include total thyroidectomy, right thyroid lobectomy, left thyroid lobectomy, minimally invasive approach to thyroidectomy, video-assisted approach to thyroidectomy, and endoscopic approaches, such as the transaxillary approach, bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA), and trans-oral thyroid surgery (TOEVA). The Atlas is intended for a broader audience than publications for other procedures since thyroidectomy is among the most common neck procedures. Description: This is a comprehensive atlas of various thyroid surgical procedures with accompanying text giving perspective to the lavish illustrations.
Purpose: The book is intended to "help all surgeons caring for patients with thyroid disease minimize complications and perform successful thyroidectomy." The editor further states that he hopes "this atlas will provide an indispensable source of knowledge to all surgeons, those who just started their career, and those who are...learning new techniques." It amply achieves these worthy objectives.
Audience: This is a book for surgical specialists — surgeons who perform thyroid surgery, whether they are learning the fundamentals of their craft or are hoping to improve their technique and add new procedures to their armamentarium. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The editor and contributing authors are internationally known experts.
Features: The book covers the entire gamut of thyroid surgery from lobectomy through endoscopic techniques. It includes an excellent chapter on thyroidectomy in under-resourced countries. Chapters on difficult problems such as substernal goiter or the need to incorporate a complete node dissection with a thyroidectomy for cancer are thoroughly treated. The atlas is lavishly illustrated throughout with color photos and color drawings. In some chapters, drawings are paired with photos to enhance identification of key structures, and in others, they are used to augment the photos.
Assessment: This is an excellent addition to the literature on thyroid surgery. It will find a place on the shelf of surgeons operating in this area.
