My friend Tyler came out of the school at the same time I did. Before I could say anything, Tyler yelled, "What's up, Austin?"
I said, "Not much," but inside I was bursting with excitement.
As I started to run quickly toward my house, I yelled back at Tyler, "I've got to get home fast because my mom and dad said they have a big surprise for me today."
He stepped on his bus and yell, "What do you think it is?"
"I have no idea!"
At dinner, the anticipation was killing me. "Come on, I can't eat with all this suspense," I said loudly. "What's my surprise?"
With a big smile, Mom said, "Well, Austin, we believe you're ready."
Dad then interjected, "It's time for you to start learning the value of money."
With a confused look, I asked them, "Really, how do I do that?"
"You are now going to receive an allowance for your chores," Mom said with excitement in her voice.
I yelled, "All right!"
As I raked the leaves in the front yard, I thought of all the things I could buy when I became rich. Maybe I would buy all the candy in the supermarket or maybe all the toys at the store.
The possibilities were endless.
"Tyler told me your parents are giving you an allowance now," Hope said.
"Yes, they are. So ice cream is on me this Saturday," I said with all the confidence of a billionaire.
"Wow, that's awesome! Thanks," Hope said with a little surprise in her voice.
"No problem. I'm rich now," I said.
I held out my hand, and Mom put the money in it. "Here you go, Austin. Spend it wisely."
I said proudly, "I will, Mom."
I told the clerk behind the counter with all the confidence of a hero, "We would like three ice cream cones with all the toppings. Spare no expense. I get an allowance now!"
Tyler and Hope said, "Yay! Thanks, Austin!"
Wow! I thought as the clerk handed me my change. I never knew ice cream was so expensive. Almost my whole allowance is gone.
"Dad," I said as I walked toward him.
"Is there a chance I could get a raise?" I knew the answer before I asked.
"What happened? Is all your money gone?"
I told him with a little disappointment in my voice, "I took Tyler and Hope out for ice cream, and it cost way more than I thought it would."
