Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite Marc A. DiGiacomo is back with his Small Town series, Book 2: Back In Town. Having read the first book, In A Small Town, I was intrigued to join the suspenseful ride in DiGiacomo’s crime fiction yet again. This time, Detective Matt Longo's tough case is on a different level. Donny Mello, now his former partner, is revealed as a corrupt traitor and has links with organized crime. Recently promoted Detective Franny Longo, Matt’s own younger brother, is on board, as well as F.B.I. Agent Cynthia Shyler. In Book 1, it took me quite some time to be comfortable with his writing style, due to the narrative transition between the present and a generous number of flashbacks. It wasn't quite smooth then, but the prose shows great improvements in Book 2. The plot is also developed much better. On the other hand, this is not a standalone story. Readers who didn't read the first book might be confused, as there are a number of flashbacks that tie back to Book 1. Personally, I would not consider this a flaw – this is a series after all. Nonetheless, an improved work from DiGiacomo for the series. Being a former police detective certainly helps him develop a solid plot and enhance the authenticity of the story – this is definitely DiGiacomo’s strength. Just a note for readers - the book contains some strong language in parts.

As Good as it gets- Back In Town is Marc DiGiacomo's second in a series, following In A Small Town, which I read last year. Initially I had some memory struggles, but it didn't take long before I was back in the groove with some of my favorite characters, and diggin the new ones - good and bad. Flashbacks assisted the swift progression of this sequel for those who did not read DiGiacomo's first installment, In A Small Town. This book is not for the faint of heart, and to me it delved deeper into forbidden areas and brought more chills to this reader as violence intensified. Extreme carnage, sex, corruption, and mega profanity is expected when reading police procedural reads, and for me, reminds readers that DiGiacomo lived this lifestyle and walked a lot of miles in the shoes of Longo. Shiver. Thankfully the author balances the horror with tender, insightful scenes that gave me nice moments of Zen to slow my racing pulse. I'm loving the imaginary town of Hutchville in a strange way, maybe because I'm so looking forward to returning in book three, despite knowing someone has to die. Please say it won't be Matt Longo. How can it be? Surely this series is bound to be made into movies. Kudos to Marc DiGiacomo for penning another winner that has me waiting for baited breath for the third.
