Read an Excerpt

It’s fourth down and goal to go. The football is just three yards from the end zone—three yards from the win. Your team is trailing, 24–20. You need a touchdown; you need those six points for victory. You glance at the scoreboard. The clock ticks under its final minute. This is your team’s last chance. As the quarterback, it’s up to you to win it. Championships are never easy.

The coach wants you to fake a handoff to the running back, keep the football, and run it into the end zone. You’ve done this before. It might work. It will work.

You call the play in the huddle, and your team lines up. You walk to the line of scrimmage, and you scan the defense. You see an opening. You know what to do. You know where to run.

You glance at your parents in the bleachers. Your mom smiles widely.

Sitting next to her, your dad nods. “You can do it!” he yells.

More shouts come from both sides. It mostly sounds like garbled noise, but every once in a while, you hear a distinct cheer.

“Go Gators!”

“Run the ball!”

The only voices that matter right now are yours and your coach’s.

You put your hands under the center. As you do, the defense shifts; the players change positions. They crowd the line of scrimmage. The hole that you were going to run through closes. The other team knows you’re going to run the football. They’re expecting it.

A quarterback knows how to audible—to change the play at the last second. But this is the championship. Your coach knows more about the game than you do. Should you trust his call and do what he says? The running play still might work. Or should you audible to a pass and do what the defense doesn’t expect?

What will you choose to do?
