Having your life in order, and finally feeling as if you are in control of your own destiny is important to Imani. Now a doctor with her own clinic, she’s overcome tremendous obstacles, personal and professional to get where she is. Of course, her mama still thinks all isn’t as it should be – her baby should be married by now, and when there are grandbabies to love and play with, she’ll know that her daughter is finally settled and one less thing to worry about, much. Now back in her hometown to be a bridesmaid, Imani is just hoping to get through this visit, celebrate, connect with old friends and then return to her own life. Xavier is successful, driven and eyeing a seat on the City Council. What he didn’t realize until he spotted Imani is that the feelings that he’d had, since high school for her were still there. If only he hadn’t been such a jerk and broken her heart then. But, he’s grown and learned, and she’s never quite left his mind: he’s going to push, cajole, plead and charm his way back into her good graces, and get that second chance. From the first page, this story drew me in, and the more I learned of Imani’s past and struggles, the more I wanted her to find someone like Xavier: she deserves a truly good and driven man, and he is just that. But, her hesitation is understandable, never really having recovered from that first break-up, and worried that some of her own trials and struggles won’t be easy for her to explain, she’s not ready to jump right in. But everyone, yes EVERYONE thinks (as I do) that these two are perfectly matched: from Imani’s cousin who will do anything to support, push and protect her, to Xavier’s fraternity brothers always ready with advice, problem solving and even a bit of meddling to redirect him. So many moments in this story brought emotion, conflict, understanding and resolution, both individually and as a couple to these two. And despite Xavier’s very machismo and rather uncharacteristically harsh initial response to the events Imani shared that still burn her with shame and regret, his ability to find empathy and understanding (often with pushes from his friends) brought him to better understand her as the woman she has become, and allowed their connection to strengthen. A wonderful story of second-chances, understanding, forgiveness and above all, love. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
3 stars This book didn't mesh well for me. The writing in the beginning was a bit stilted and seemed like it was a bit forced but the book did have an ok plot. The characters had a great backstory and they changed throughout the book and the changes were great. I appreciated the strength of the characters, especially Imani, as she had to go through a lot and in the end she didn't compromise. She did what she had to do in order to survive in a time where she was ashamed of her life. Even though I liked Imani her reactions with Xavier did not seem realistic. In the beginning she did what I think many in her position would do she tried to keep her distance. But after the emotional blow he dealt to her at the end she took him back without a thought. That just didn't seem realistic to me. Those are the reasons I couldn't quite get into this book. I want an escape and a book that brings everything the author has in his/her arsenal. This book seemed like the author was trying to write a style that is not her. But the plot and the characters were great and I do believe the author can flourish with the right type of book. This one, for me, just was not it. ~A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection.
Back to Your Love by Kianna Alexander is the first book in her new Brothers of TDT series. This was a nice sweet second chance romance. Imani Grant was once again attending one of her friend’s wedding, knowing she was probably the last one left not married. While at the wedding, she sees Xavier Whitted, her high school sweetheart, whom she has not seen in 10 years, when he broke her heart. Imani does not want anything to do with Xavier, but he is determined to win her back. Xavier knows he hurt Imani, but he was just out of high school, and she was going away to college. But now both are successful; her being a doctor of dermatology and he running for a council seat. With pressure from friends and family, Imani realizes that she still has feelings for Xavier, and finds it difficult to ignore his charming and persistent courtship. However, Imani has a secret that she has hidden from everyone, including her mother. Only her cousin knows the truth of what happened years ago, that is hidden by a gag order. When Imani finds herself falling in love again with Xavier she fears telling him the truth, worrying that she will harm his chances to win the election, as well as her concern that he wouldn’t understand. They both had a lot of chemistry and we knew they belonged together. Another very nice aspect to this second chance romance was the secondary characters. Imani’s cousin was a great addition, as she was fun and loyal to her. Xavier’s college buddies were awesome, and I look forward to seeing their stories in the future. As the romance heats up, when it begins to look like our couple will find happiness, all hell breaks loose threatening their relationship. Will Xavier forgive Imani for hiding things from him? Will Imani survive another heart break with Xavier? As much as I did enjoy their romance, there were a few things that did annoy me. After 10 years of no contact with Imani, Xavier was a bit too glib in thinking he will win Imani back. When her place was ransacked, he was quick to get mad that she thought it was one of his kids (he helped young kids in need), which turned out to be true. He also jumped to the conclusion as to her secret when it was revealed, and I thought he behaved badly and unfairly. However, with all that said, there was a happy ending. I loved when Xavier’s friends went behind his back to convince Imani to give Xavier another chance. The epilogue was also very well done. If you enjoy sweet romances, second chances and a great supporting cast, I suggest you read Back to Your Love.
