About the Author

As a little girl I loved to create fantasy worlds and then give all my friends roles to play. Of course, I was always the heroine! Books have always been an escape for me and brought me so much pleasure, but it didn't occur to me that I could possibly be a writer for a living until I was in a career that was not my passion. One day, I decided I wanted to craft stories like the ones I loved, and with a great leap of faith I quit my day job and decided to try to make my dream come true. I discovered my passion, and I have never looked back. I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I have been able to make a career out of sharing the stories that are in my head! I write Scottish Medieval Romance, Regency Romance, and I have even written a Paranormal Romance book. And because I have the best readers in the world, I have hit the USA Today bestseller list several times. This book has three big flaws. The first is the typos - here were enough of them to pull me out of the story. The second was continuity - in one instance, two characters meet, and then about 10 pages later, one of those asked a third character about the first one and says he never met that person. The third issue was characters - there were too many. This book was chalk full of so many references to people and name dropping and craziness that I could not keep track of who knew whom and what when. Fourth - too much arbitrary death. It's a fine plot device to propel the story forward but man, people were dying right and left for no actual reason. I do think this author has potential, and would be willing to read another book once she worked out some of the kinks. Otherwise, this was a bit of a mess.

This book is about 249 long. It is well edited ( I suppose the corrected that) except for one place where she refers to someone as Mrs. Sutherland - and the guy was supposed to be single and there was no mother or sisters-in-laws who could potentially have that name. I'm grateful for the free read and also for the fact this is not one of those books that have a few chapters which end in a cliffhanger. This is a full length book without a cliffhanger. That being said, The storyline is ok but it has long and tedious versions of the same event as experienced by different people. It is not really captivating, indeed it's borderline boring.. I skimmed most of it. Iwould NOT recomb

Having read Julie's other novel I decided to give this one a shot. This is the kind of book you pick up to read and get so lost in the story, that you forget everything around you. Suddenly as you sadly finish the last line of the book, you realize you must return to reality. You fall in love with the characters and are cheering them on to the end. The story is gripping and leaves you hungry for what happens next. This was an utterly delightful and refreshing novel!!

Captivating book, which I couldn't put down. I finished it at midnight, even though I had to get up at 6 AM. I was pleasantly surprised that it would hold my attention, since I usually only read mysteries. Great job. When's the next book coming out?

Really enjoyed this story, good and clean with mystery.

This is a very enjoyable story. A woman, Gillian, who is willing to give up her home and her chance at happiness to protect her sister from a secret. Gillian's loyalty to family despite all the secrets surrounding her endeared her to me. She does what she thinks is right, even bargain with a rake. Alex was a good counterpart with his own dark issues. The narrator, Tristan Hunt, helped bring life and emotion to the characters. I highly recommend this story. I received a copy of this audio as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

It was okay. I wasn't " drawn" to the heroine in this story & the prequel to the next of her sister seems similar, so no I won't be continuing in this series.

Gillian believes that she can escape marriage to her horrible betrothed and keep the family secret if she can marry the American partner in Alex’s shipping company. Now all she needs to do is get him to pay more attention to her than to her sister. Will Alex help her with her quest, or is he discovering he might not want his partner to have her? This is a well-written entertaining story with mystery, blackmail, secrets, and a couple of somewhat uncommon courtships. The characters include a spunky heroine, a somewhat confused hero, a nasty villain, and a “helpful” aunt. The story is fun to read. There are a few twists and turns and a fitting comeuppance for the villain(s). I enjoyed Tristan Hunt’s narration. His smooth baritone was a pleasure to listen to.

FANTASTIC, Another great by Julie Johnstone! Julie has never let me down in her books and Bargaining With A Rake is no exception. This is her 1st book in A Whisper Of Scandal series. The storyline is amazing and very creative, you bond with the characters and the descriptions are so clear you can see them in your mind. Once you start reading this book, you won’t be able to put it down. There are dark secrets, blackmail, pure evil, a love of family, friendship, caring, death, revenge, betrothed, hate, judgement, loneliness, unexpected kindness, pride, scoundrels, villains, abuse, sisterly love, protection and so much more. I highly recommend this book, it is great from the 1st page to the last. This love story begins In London 1817 with Gillian Rutherford and Drake Sutherland an American or is it with Alexander Trevelle Lord Lionhurst? You will just have to read to find out. ***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

I enjoyed this book. Another reviewer pointed out some flaws that need to be corrected and while noticeable I was not distracted from the main plot line. The main characters were interesting and the dialogue engaging.

I enjoyed the action, intrigue, and romance of this story, from the ballrooms and London houses to the hunts and country estates. It was a fairly dark story with tragedies from the past and present fueling the heart-wrenching drama. Unable to protect her family from the secrets of the past, Gillian decides the only thing to do is marry an American who will take her and her sister far away from England. She strikes a bargain with the notorious rake Alex, Lord Lionhurst, to gain his help in convincing his friend to marry her. The plan will also destroy Alex's greatest enemy, who just happens to be Gillian's current fiance. It seems like a good plan for both sides, but what happens when a man who has sworn to never love again and a woman who can't afford to marry for love fall for each other?

I totally enjoyed reading Julie Johnstone's Bargaining With A Rake! Alex and Gillian's story is well written and fast paced. The characters are fantastic and when coupled with lots of planning and scheming and the humor when those plans backfire, it makes for a fun read. There's also plenty of drama and sizzle. Bargaining With A Rake is book 1 of A Whisper of Scandal series, but can be read as a stand alone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. I look forward to reading more from Julie Johnstone in the future.

ENTHRALLING CAPTIVATING ROMANCE I love Julie Johnstone’s books. This highly talented author grabs the reader and pulls them into the story. Open up the book and escape for a while. Bargaining with a Rake is book 1 of A Whisper of Scandal series. You will want the entire series. Gilliam Rutherford’s most deepest dream is to escape both her family’s dark secret and an unwanted marriage, which will force her to remain in London, take her sister and leave England. She is desperate enough to try anything to make this happen. She makes plans to seduce a shipping tycoon from America into marrying her. Sutherland is looking for a wife and thinks Gilliam will fill his need very well. Lord Lionhurst, Alexander Trevelle, is Sutherland’s, the American’s friend. All three meet at a ball and although Alexander knew Gilliam knew each other when they were children they fail to recognize each other. Alexander discovers her plans and takes it upon himself to stop her at whatever the cost. Anyone who will seduce and trap his friend into marriage is not the sort of person he would wish on anyone. When he discovers who Gilliam is currently betrothed to, a man he desperately wants to destroy, he has a proposal for her, with his final goal to seduce and then leave her. He will help her win his friend’s hand if she will help him gain revenge against her current unwanted betrothed. The bottom line is he wants Gilliam for himself and plans through his seduction to win her heart. Gilliam and Alexander are truly two of the most contrary and stubborn members of the ton. Mix that together with an Aunt and sister who love to meddle and you have a recipe for surprises, suspense, humor, and passion. I highly recommend anything written by this author to anyone who loves to read romance.

A witty debut novel from Julie Johnstone. Lady Gillian's the keeper of family secrets and determined to protect her sister at any cost. I loved the lengths she was prepared to go to in her quest to escape their scandalous past. I particularly loved hero Alex. He's bold and bowled over by Gillian. A protective man after my own heart. Compulsive reading.

Good story from the beginning but rushed and unsatisfyingly short ending.
