About the Author

Nancy J. Niles is currently teaching undergraduate business and healthcare management classes in the AACSB accredited Department of Business Administration at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. She became very interested in health issues as a result of spending 5 years with the U.S. Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa.Her graduate education has focused on health policy and management. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors of a local nonprofit health organization, Healthy Learners.

Description: The delivery of healthcare has become a priority in this country. This book presents the history of healthcare to the present, with a focus on the Affordable Care Act of 2010 and the impact it has on the delivery of care. Much of the information centers on outcomes, patients, and improvements in care delivery. An accompanying website contains an ebook with interactive tools, a study center, assessments, and analytics.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive history and the current state of healthcare in the United States. The book describes many facets of the healthcare system, including inpatient and outpatient care. The book is definitely necessary to get an understanding of the operation of care delivery in this nation.
Audience: This book is valuable to healthcare practitioners, students, and anyone who is interested in the past and present development and operation of healthcare delivery. The primary audience is healthcare practitioners (allied health, physicians, nurses, case managers, etc.). The book discusses the necessity of achieving healthcare for all individuals and uses examples of other care delivery systems in Europe and Canada. The author has an enhanced educational repertoire that includes three master's degrees and extensive teaching and research experience. She has also spent time in other countries and witnessed varied methods of care delivery.
Features: The book explains all facets of healthcare delivery in the United States. The 14 chapters analyze/explain important topics such as milestones in healthcare, the ACA's impact on care delivery, current operations, government involvement, public health priorities, inpatient and outpatient care, care provider roles, healthcare financial management, managed care, technology, legal and ethical considerations, and provision of mental healthcare. The chapters include learning objectives, lists of interesting facts, associated vocabulary lists, consumer perspectives, and numerous graphics/lists/tables. The chapter summaries are excellent and provide the relevant key points. The book also includes several student activities and current event exercises. The best aspects of the book are the organization of the information, graphics and tools, summary highlights, the clarity of the writing, relevant subject material, chapter layout, and reinforcement of key points. The tables and graphics are equally engaging and easier to view than on the website. One area that needs additional discussion is financing of healthcare for all in the United States.
Assessment: As an experienced healthcare provider, I found the book comprehensive as it provides an in-depth and current review of all facets of healthcare in the United States. The book is well organized and well written. It is useful as a reference for healthcare novices as well as experienced practitioners.
