Finally, a book that tells the important things without trying to cover every single thing Windows can do. I've used Windows for years but was still fumbling around and there are a lot of things in this book I didn't know. I didn't know that if I hold my Ctrl key down and move my mouse thumbwheel or press the up and down arrows on my keyboard, I can increase or decrease the size of whatever I'm looking at. I didn't know how to customize my folder views. And there were several topics in the Q&A section that I've had trouble with. I really liked the fact that in just 2 or 3 hours I was able to improve my skills to the point that I know what I'm doing on any computer. I hope the author publishes this kind of book for other softwares.

This book is perfect for anyone who didn't learn the basics of their Windows PC and it tells how to customize things like your desktop and start menu too. I liked the Q&A section because it presents problems that people have (desktop icons disappearing, not being able to close a window, etc.) There are a lot of screen pictures and because it's not based on a single version of Windows, it helps you to be able to figure out what to do on different computers. Now I'm ready for volume 2.

Basics of Windows should be shipped with every PC with Windows. Stephie Smith has made learning Windows so simple even a caveman could do it! Her basic approach obviously comes from her real-life instruction to non-PC users on how to maneuver through Windows. The large, color screenshots and clear instructions show exactly where you are and what to do for Windows XP, Vista, and 7. It’s perfect for those new to the PC-scene or those who never learned the basics.
