Six years earlier, Trina Grissom disappeared, on the run for her life. Now living under an assumed identity—as Samantha Marsh—she still struggles with the dark secret she harbors and the fear she might one day be found. When she moves to the coastal town of Rarity Cove, South Carolina, to open a café, a handsome widower begins to chip away at the walls she's built to protect herself.

Mark St. Clair lost his wife two years ago in a tragic accident. Head of the grand St. Clair resort, he distracts himself from his lingering grief by running the family business and caring for his troubled young daughter...until a beautiful restaurateur sets up shop in town. Before meeting Samantha, Mark was convinced he could never be drawn to another woman. But as his attraction to Samantha grows, the mystery surrounding her deepens.

As the two begin a hesitant courtship, double perils emerge. Someone from Samantha's lurid past comes calling, threatening to expose her. And a powerful hurricane is forming in the Atlantic with the small beach town in its path. Trapped in the storm by the brutal man who wants vengeance on Samantha, she and Mark must fight for their lives.

A new series by Leslie Tentler--yay! Before the Storm features heroine on-the-run and new cafe owner Samantha Marsh (nee Trina Grissom) and single father and widower Mark St. Clair...who also happens to run a very fancy resort hotel. The location is lovely, if a bit tropical storm- and hurricane-prone, and the characters, both the main ones and the secondary, are a nice mix. If Ms. Tentler's going to continue this series (which I assume is what is meant by "a Rarity Cove novel"), I for one will be glad to revisit both the people and the places we see here. (Except not the dead people. I don't want to see them again.) The first half of the novel has some spooky/creepy undertones, as Sam, who believes she murdered her ex-a-hole (I'm not sure what the "technical" term would be here. He's not really an ex-boyfriend, or an ex-boss--both those terms are way too nice. So I'll stick with that one) keeps getting creepy someone's-watching-me vibes. The romance between her and Mark is slow moving, because he's a nice guy who's very busy with his hotel and daughter and not sure he's ready to go there just yet. Sam doesn't think she should get involved with anyone ever again, but especially not someone like Mark--it's too risky, and she doesn't want to bring her special brand of crappy past into his and his daughter Emily's lives. Other than the slight feeling of creepiness, it moves at a fairly slow first. When Sam's wannabe blackmailer shows up, and the romance between Sam and Mark heats up, the pace picks up. Then we've got the approaching storm, the big reveal, and a huge threat from Sam's past showing up--and boy, do things get intense! The last couple chapters are can't-put-it-down reading for sure. With a super sweet ending, fortunately. Whew! I did get a bit annoyed with Mark when he found out Sam's big secret, though--he was the one who pushed her for the romance, after all, and he's pretty sure by that time he's in love with her BUT he doesn't give her a chance to give her side and explain the reasons. She's got them. They're pretty good. That bothered me--it felt like he should be better than that. He makes up for it later, but still... Fingers crossed there'll be more from this series. Carter could have a story in, I'd just love to head back to the beach some more :) Rating: 4 stars / B+ I received a complimentary coopy in exchange for an honest review.

The story starts with Trina trying to get away - from what, you don't yet know. That plan goes wrong and then you skip ahead six years. Now she is Samantha Marsh, opening her own Cafe Bella, in a small and friendly town by the sea. This is a romantic suspense where you find out the back story as you go along. Mark and Sam are perfect for each other, but I will admit to wanting to shake the pair of them as they dithered about. The supporting characters are well-written, whether it is the supportiveness of Mark's sister, Mercer; the misguided protectiveness of Carter or the over snobbery of Olivia. The characters do change and grow throughout the book which is always good to read. With a solid storyline and a well time plot leading up to the climax, this is an enjoyable read. Definitely recommended. * I received this book from Barclay Publicity in return for a fair and honest review. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

I absolutely love BEFORE THE STORM! It's well written, with an engaging plot, suspenseful and will have you experiencing a variety of emotions - from anticipation to terror and everything in between - alongside the characters! Samantha Marsh has not had an easy life but Rarity Cove, South Carolina is her chance to start over and make something of her life, and her business Café Bella is it. Her secrets are so dangerous and sordid that she has chosen a lifetime of solitude over dragging any man into the mess of her life and her attraction to a member of Rarity Cove's leading family, while unexpected but very tempting, is not going to change her mind. What Samantha does not count on is her hunger for a connection and how safe Mark makes her feel. Since the death of his wife in a car accident, Mark St. Clair has buried himself in his work running the family hotel and taking care of his five-year old daughter and despite pressure from his family, he has resisted all involvement. That changes when Samantha Marsh sets up shop in Rarity Cove. For the first time since his wife's death, Mark is interested in a woman and determined to win her over despite her reluctance to get involved with him and the secrets she obviously has. But secrets never stay that way for long and unfortunately, Samantha's carefully constructed life begins to unravel when her past follows her to Rarity Cove and her secrets are exposed. Mark also has to contend with frayed familial relationships and the interference of well-intentioned family members. Danger, secrets and complex sibling relationships combine to make BEFORE THE STORM very appealing. Ms. Tentler creates very interesting characters and I love the deliberate and measured pace of the book, how every scene was calculated to add to the story, from Samantha and Mark's first meeting to the explosive end, and how even the most ordinary scenes had a thread of tension woven through them and kept me on edge, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Leslie Tentler is not a new author to me. I have read her Chasing Evil series. I knew what I would find with her latest book... and I wasn't disappointed. Samantha has a secret. Samantha isn't even her real name and she's been on the run for 7 years. She has a secret past .. and she left a dead man behind, taking with her only an old ragged teddy bear that was given to her as a child and her mother's cameo locket. Mark is a good looking widower with a 4 year old daughter to take care of. His daughter has not spoken since the night her mother was killed in an auto accident. He's still grieving .. but when he meets Samantha, something comes back to life for him. I loved the characters! Samantha and Mark are so deliciously drawn. Carter, the actor-brother, is usually trying to stir up trouble and is the first to discover Samantha's past life. Olivia, as their mother, is terrifyingly real. Mercer, his younger sister, rounds out the family ..and she is also keeping secrets from her rich, snobbish mother. And Emily is such a sweet child. When Samantha's past catches up with her, she's not the only one in danger. And everything comes to a head as a hurricane releases it torment on their small town and its inhabitants. I was riveted to the suspense side of this book and enjoyed watching Sam and Mark slowly overcome the obstacles and give in to their attraction. My thanks to the author / NetGalley / Barclay Publicity /Left Field Press who furnished a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Ms Tentler is an auto buy author for me – she writes great characters that you care about, gripping suspense and combines that with a wonderful romance - Before the Storm has all those ingredients. In her previous novels (Midnight Caller, Midnight Fear, Edge of Midnight and Fallen) each hero was a member of law enforcement around which the suspense centered. In Before the Storm, Ms Tentler has mixed things up a little by removing that element and having both the hero and the heroine as civilians, bringing a fresh slant to the novel. Samantha Marsh’s life has been turned upside down – she is on the run having changed her identity, and now, settling in Rarity Cove, she opens up a gourmet bakery/cafe and tries to live a ‘normal’ life. Mark St Clair runs his family’s resort hotel – he is a widower with a young daughter who is still suffering from the death of her mother. When he meets Samantha he is immediately drawn to her but as the attraction deepens so does the mystery about her past. Before the Storm starts off with the romance front and center with little hints and revelations about Samantha’s past. Just as she and Mark are falling in love the suspense angle comes in fast and furious to put everything on its head. Ms Tentler is fabulous at creating really nasty ‘bad guys’ and leaves you wondering just how she is going to dig her characters out of the chaos around them to give them their HEA! This made it one of those ‘just one more page/chapter’ reads. And there are a few surprises along the way to keep things hopping. As an aside Mark also has a brother Carter who was an intriguing character and it would be nice to see him again. Moving. Engrossing. Recommended.

The past, secrets, fears and reservations play a big part in this story. Samantha and Mark feel attraction for one another from their first meeting but with the pasts they both have are not willing to move forward easily or quickly. There is hesitation and family interference along with personal indecision to contend with. Add to this some very bad characters and a hurricane and the plot thickens. I enjoyed the story, though it is somewhat familiar, and would like to say it was very well written and edited. The one character I would like to know more about is Luther but have a feeling he may not get his own book, though he just might deserve one. This is the first book I have read by Leslie Tentler but hope that it will not be the last. Thank you to NetGalley and Barclay Publicity for the copy of this book to read and review.

The cover of Before the Storm by Leslie Tentler drew me in first, and her amazing writing very quickly had me mesmerized in this fast paced romantic suspense! I really enjoyed Samantha and Mark's story. Leslie kept me on edge between the suspense and the hope of romance woven into it all. Samantha has a secret past she hides well. She has done really well for herself despite it all, but there is always a glimmer of fear around the edges. She doesn't get close to anyone, but is also not letting fear of the past rule her every move. Mark runs his family's resort, and for different, just as painful reasons has no desire to be involved with anyone at this time in his life. When Samantha and Mark are drawn together, the hint of attraction between them slowly builds. But as a storm closes in on them, so does real danger... I loved how Leslie wrote Before the Storm. The place and the characters felt real to me. I liked what Samantha was doing with her life. She is a strong, brave woman who I could easily feel for. Mark is struggling also, and his daughter is so sweet. I liked that nothing was rushed between them, and that they were both struggling with believable issues. The connection between Samantha and Mark is unmistakable, even if they are both reluctant to move on it at first. There is a lot going on, especially for Samantha, and I liked how Leslie Tentler worked it all into this strong plot. The secondary characters add a lot of interest and a real feel also. Mark's brother was an interesting character to get to know, and he unwittingly moves the plot and danger forward! I really liked Luther, who works for Samantha. You will have to read the book to find out why, but he was just someone who I really liked and even as a secondary character he had a lot to contribute to the story. The suspense is catchy and I loved where Leslie took this story, from the romance, the storm, and the fight for life. She held my interest for the whole story with an exciting plot and great descriptions. I'd highly recommend Before the Storm to any romantic suspense reader!
