Beneath the Dust

Beneath the Dust is set in the 1930's, a time of depression and despair. Though books have been written about those who left, this is the story of those who stayed behind... This book chronicles the life of Johnnie Belle Veazey, a 17 year old from Star City, Arkansas, who found migrant work in Iowa, and Ralph Abraham Showalter, who was left to raise seven children alone when his young wife died in childbirth. Their experiences give voice to many who struggled to do more than merely survive.
