Everything they knew is gone...
Five men emerge from the remnants of destruction with extraordinary new powers.
They are humankind's last hope, but they cannot survive this devastated world alone.

When Dr. Elliott Drake emerges from a cave after traveling fifty years through time, the world as he knew it in 2010 is gone. Cities are overgrown jungles, and what's left of civilization has been repressed by crystal-wearing immortal beings. But even more unsettling: Elliott has acquired an extraordinary ability--the power to heal.

But even that gift, in a world that lacks the technology and infrastructure of his past, is a two-edged sword for Elliott.

Jade Kapiza, who was once imprisoned by the immortal beings, has been in hiding for years. But now she's determined to help the human race fight back against the control of her captors. She can trust no one...but when Elliott comes into her life, he pushes at her defenses and begins to tear down the walls she's built so carefully.

Yet the mysterious doctor seems to have secrets of his own. Can Jade trust Elliott with her heart, even as they risk their lives to save a band of innocents?

And can Elliott find a new place for himself--a home--in this new, ravaged world?

Chance led me to this book. It was free on my Nook. Am I ever glad I read it!!! I am a voracious reader, enjoying many different genres of stories. If you have the ability to accept possibilities not yet discovered or experienced in real life, and enjoy an intelligent, entertaining story with well developed, flawed but loveable characters, you must give this book a try. It was about 280 pages on my Nook. It felt full length. It is part of a series. In this one, it ends in a satisfying way so one could leave it and not be mad at the author for writing an infuriating cliff hanger! Because I fell in love with the people, I want to know more about what happens to them in this distopian world. So, I do want to read more in this series and will. Fantastic. Just fantastic!!!

All around it was a decent read. There are some errors throughout the book that make you pause and re-read to make sure you understand what the author is trying to say, but there are not enough through the book that make it a waste of your time to read. The author bounces around a lot and it can get quite confusing as to where you are in the storyline and who the main characters of the entire book should be. The characters are decently developed but not accurately described. I'm still uncertain if one of the main characters is caucasion, Hispanic or African American because the author described him in three different ways. I guess the only important thing is he is a physically strong male? The only other issue is that it ends on a cliffhanger. It is like there was a sudden mad rush to finish the novel and no real ending or resolution was offered. It's worth a try if you are into apocalyptic reads.

I absolutely loved and enjoyed listening to the free audiobook I received from Colleen Gleason, Beyond the Night by Joss Ware. Elliott Drake and his friends wake up to find the world desolate, changed, and fifty years later. A group of teenagers are being attacked by creatures called gangas and as Elliott and his friends go to rescue them a woman, Jade, comes barreling in riding bareback. Elliott is a doctor and has a gift of healing except there is a drawback, he takes on the illness and can inadvertently pass it onto someone else by touching them. Not only are there gangas and other animals to stay away from but also Strangers, hard to kill beings that look and act like humans. Read and/or listen to the highly recommended, entertaining, suspenseful, thrilling, full of adventure and romance, audiobook of Beyond the Night by Joss Ware, the phenomenal and talented author Colleen Gleason.

This is the first book in The Heroes of New Vegas, which features a post-apocalyptic world centered around what used to be Las Vegas. Five men enter a cave and then wake up 50 years later to find the world devastated, all the people they knew gone, and fearsome creatures roaming the night. They also learn that each one of them has a new power or gift. Elliott, who was a doctor before the change, now has the power to heal people, but this "gift" takes a toll on Elliott and those around him. When he meets Jade, a woman who has survived being abducted by the mysterious "immortals" and is trying to make a life for herself in what is left of Vegas, he wants to do all he can to keep her safe. This is a great beginning to the series and does a good job of setting up this world. The people have adapted to their new reality and are doing their best to survive. There is intrigue and mystery over what happened to cause the change, who is responsible, and what the dangerous zombie-like gangas really want. And of course, the guys are all super-hot and the women strong and independent!
