About the Author

Nikolaj lives in Auckland, New Zealand with his long suffering partner, their four children and a cat that thinks she's a tiger. His work as a yacht captain takes him away for long periods to far flung corners of the globe. It's a full on job but when possible Nikolaj escapes into a fantasy world of teleporting clouds and flying cats to write stories for his children. He used to write these out long-hand but more recently has been tapping them out on an i-pad and publishing them online. While his children are rapidly growing up, the younger two are firm fans and always demand a bedtime story when Dad is home.

This book was tricky to access; I had to use the "go to page" function to get past the cover, and the screen froze several times while reading. (I don't think the fault was with my Nook, as at least one other reviewer experienced the same issue.) Also, the pagination didn't seem to be accurate; page numbers stopped at 6, while the content continued. Successful navigation reveals not a story but a sketchbook of cats in various poses. My first impression was that the author was either a child or just a not-so-talented artist, as the drawings are primarily line art (and rather crudely done at that). However, it's obvious that the author knows--and most likely loves--cats. I soon began to appreciate how well these simple sketches portray feline purr-sonalities. These cariCATures may not be everyone's cup of tea, but cat lovers with an appreciation of folk art will likely enjoy this collection. I'd love to see this book redone with more content and fewer technical issues--but perhaps that's why the present version is free!
