Princess Alikina must overcome her fear. Outside her enchanted castle, the world is crumbling and certain to fall, and she is a princess, subject to an undesired position as an heir.

But Alikina finds life much safer and more comfortable living vicariously through the books she finds in the castle's library.

Her inner conflict begins the night a mortally wounded stranger somehow breaches the spell that surrounds the castle. "The king still lives!" he says.
