Conventional wisdom holds that you can't teach writing. Maybe, maybe not. But you can encourage writers to recognize the building blocks and recurring elements of their own, and to structure it in a way that grows to a natural crescendo, taking full advantage of its strengths, characters, themes. I took a workshop with Stuart Horwitz, and that's what the class did for me. In this book he takes complex storytelling elements (scenes, themes, etc) and breaks them down to pieces easier to handle, then teaches writers to scatter them throughout the work, effectively. A great book to add to the "practical craft" side of the writer's bookshelf. Highly recommend.
A brilliant, entertaining look at literary structure at the macro-level. If you're stuck or struggling to finish a manuscript, this is the book for you.
