This collection, set in Normandy, opens with Boule de Suif, Maupassant's "masterpiece" according to Flaubert. The storyteller's art lets us see the intimacy of rural life, at the opposite end of the spectrum from the artificial and worldly Parisian universe. But this life set to the rhythm of nature is just as cruel.
