Bridging the Gap: Breaking Barriers and Building Pathways to Transportation Careers
In Bridging the Gap, Esther Franklin extends a personal and urgent invitation to those ready to transform both their lives and the future of America through careers in the transportation industry. With historic infrastructure projects underway and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) promising to create over a million jobs per year, the time to act is now. Franklin offers a detailed look at five critical fields—engineering, architecture, right-of-way acquisition, appraisal, and title work—where the need for fresh talent has never been greater.

Bringing empathy and hard-earned wisdom from years of professional experience, Franklin candidly explores the obstacles that many face when trying to enter these industries. She acknowledges the systemic challenges but focuses on solutions, showing readers how to leverage opportunities through federal programs like Affirmative Action and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE). The book is a rallying cry for those seeking meaningful work, financial independence, and the chance to leave a lasting legacy—not just for themselves, but for future generations.

What sets Bridging the Gap apart is its emphasis on opportunity. Whether you’re a student, career changer, or simply searching for work with purpose, Franklin demonstrates that traditional degrees aren’t the only path to success. Through personal stories, real-world examples, and actionable advice, she offers a roadmap for anyone willing to seize this moment. This book is more than just a guide to careers; it’s a call to action for individuals who are ready to step up and help rebuild America’s foundation—one bridge, road, and rail at a time.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you have what it takes to thrive in the transportation industry, Franklin assures you: You do. All that’s left is to get started.

"Bridging the Gap offers a well-researched and practical look into the need for greater diversity and inclusion in the transportation sector. By collecting insights from professionals across various levels and disciplines, the book highlights the benefits of a more varied workforce. It goes beyond simply identifying issues by providing real-world strategies that industry leaders, educational institutions, and policymakers can implement. The book takes a two-fold approach: it first exposes the challenges that have kept marginalized communities out of transportation careers, from stereotypes to educational barriers. Then, it sets forth a detailed plan for overcoming these hurdles through mentorship programs, scholarship initiatives, and workplace reforms. Rather than just diagnosing problems, Bridging the Gap lays out a step-by-step roadmap for meaningful change. Its comprehensive framework positions it as a valuable resource for anyone committed to enhancing both the effectiveness and social responsibility of the transportation industry. Whether you're an individual looking to contribute or an organization aiming to update its practices, this book serves as an excellent guide for driving positive change."
