Purpose: The purpose is to provide interventions for prevention, identification, and treatment of social and mental health problems that fit efficiently into time-sensitive increments for the primary care provider. The authors do an excellent job of describing brief psychological techniques that can be easily implemented in a busy practice.
Audience: This book is written for family practice and other primary care physicians. Medical students, residents, and mental health professionals who work in a medical setting will also find it valuable. The authors have taught behavioral sciences and seen patients in primary care settings for many years. Their material has been field tested in clinical settings.
Features: The first two chapters contain a good discussion of the basic components of brief therapy. These chapters are essential reading as they provide the framework for the remaining chapters that cover frequently encountered clinical problems in primary care. The clinical chapters are designed as quick references to be read alone in 5-10 minutes. Each clinical chapter opens with an outline that can be used as a memory aid or guide. References are representative and quite good.
Assessment: This excellent handbook does a wonderful job of integrating the behavioral sciences into useable time-sensitive techniques for the busy primary care physician. It compares very favorably with any presentation designed to teach behavioral concepts to physicians.
