Overview

Bright Side by Kim Holden

Secrets.
Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you ...
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick's life has been anything but typical. She's endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there's a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She's also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they each have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you ...
And some will end you.

This is a great book. It truly is. It's just depressing has hell. You fall in love with the characters and the flow of the story is a very nice pace. But it sucks. It's depressing. I don't read books to get sad. Life is full of ups and downs. I felt empty after reading this story. It's a great book and that is why I gave it a five. But I still wish I wouldn't have read it.

Oh my! I just keep thinking about this book and I still can't decide 100% how I feel about it. Lovely, engaging read but absolutely gut-wrenching. I fell in love with Kate and her zest for life. Her relationships with everyone - especially with best friend Gus - are example worthy. The story was beautifully written. Be prepared to cry (I personally ugly cried through the last half of the book). I hope to see what else is in store for the characters in a future book.

One of the most breathtakingly beautiful and emotionally devastating books I’ve ever read. Bright Side is a page turner that evokes every emotion known to man and makes you feel it in bright, fluorescent, technicolor. {The happiness, the thoughtfulness, the humor was part of her, but it was also deliberate, a conscious choice. Katie didn’t just look on the bright side…she lived there.} I don’t begin to know how to write a review worthy of one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. Kim Holden is simply amazing. I am in complete and utter awe of her. The beauty that exists within the pages of this book is epic and the idea that by default that kind of beauty exists within the person who created it is startling, to say the least. I can think of no other book that, upon its conclusion, had my face soaked with tears and bearing a smile. I can think of no other book that made me feel like I wanted to strive to be a better person. This book, over any other that I’ve ever read, is the one, single, solitary book that I think every single person should read. No, not read. Experience. Every single person in the world should experience the stunning, magnificent journey that is Bright Side. I’ve been put through the emotional wringer and all I want to do is thank Kim for doing it to me. I would let this woman devastate me every single day as long as she did it with this kind of awe-inspiring beauty and elegant artistry every time. Thank you, Kim, for bestowing this story on the world and for giving us the glorious gift that it is. You are a seriously gifted author and a seriously gorgeous individual, inside and out. Please don’t ever stop writing.

Where is that sixth star when you need it? I knew full well going in that Bright Side would be a tear-jerker and might break my heart, but you know what? I don’t regret a single page. Above all, this is a stirring, feel-good story, and I was surprised by how much I laughed and smiled throughout. Kate “Bright Side” Sedgwick’s optimism is infectious. Her conscious decision to choose love over anger, to exude gratitude and reject bitterness, to live spontaneously, and to embrace each moment—both good and bad—with joyful appreciation is unbelievably uplifting. The portrayal is realistic and inspiring without being preachy. Kate has amazing wisdom, especially given that she’s a young woman barely out of her teens. Kim Holden is an astoundingly gifted writer. Her words are filled with passionate intimacy, humor and clarity. She has an unfathomable ability to breathe life into an array of complex characters, while giving each one a distinct voice. The story is enhanced by Kate’s unique circle of friends, including best friend Gus, gorgeous barista Keller, partner-in-crime Clayton, and unlikely gal pal Shelly, and they each felt like my own little personal blessings. If I wasn’t already a voracious reader, Bright Side is the type of book that would make me fall in love with reading. It’s exactly the kind of story I want my teenaged daughters to read. Kate Sedgwick has secured a spot on my list of top 5 favorite book heroines. I’m so happy I risked my heart to this story. I feel like a better person for having read it.

As I sit to write this review to tell you how i feel about this book, I realize there are just no words to explain it or describe it. I just finished this book, and i have to say its my new favorite book Ive read…ever. The characters are just amazing, especially Gus and Kate,Clayton, and Keller. The emotion, love, and passion between all the characters makes this raw and absolutely beautiful. This book teaches us that life is short, and we shouldn't take anything for granted, to always live life to the fullest and never give up on your dreams. Go after them full force, and dont let anything hold you back. I see bits of Kate in myself, and I usually dont love female characters in books very much. Kate is strong, tough, and beautiful on the inside and out, someone I look up to and admire even if she's just a fictional character. Everyone should just read this book hands down, I dont care if you think its too sad or will make you cry. Its just too perfect to pass up, and your truly missing out on the most beautiful book in the whole world if you pass this up. Im looking forward to reading more from this author overall, her work is just amazing and beautiful and I love it. I need more Bright Side in my life, and these characters in general. They are perfect. So go out there, Do Epic, and read this book. You'll love it, I promise!

What can I say about Bright Side that many others who have come before haven’t already said? Honestly, it was a fantastic read. I really enjoyed it. I first learned about Bright Side at UtopYA Con (now to be renamed Utopia Con). It seems like anyone and everyone was talking about it, telling me it was a “must-read” and that I should be forewarned, to have a box of Kleenex handy. This intrigued me, so of all the books I grabbed while there, this was the first I delved into. The storyline in and of itself did not disappoint. I could relate to Kate as she went through her daily motions, starting college. I could relate to the relationships she formed. And I have to say, the author, Kim Holden, packed a TON into this book. There are so many wonderful lessons in here, and they aren’t the slap-you-in-the-face kind of lessons like some books and other media have done, if you know what I mean. I really enjoyed that about this book. The only negative I really have to say about the storyline is that she makes a big production (for lack of a better word) about the secret reveals (there are a few) and I saw all of them coming from a mile away. Now, please keep in mind that I’ve lived a life where a lot of what happens in this book has either happened to me or happened to those I love, so it was easy to see the signs and hints ahead of time. This likely is not the case for the average reader. It also may be partly due to my own personal cynicism, as well. Yes, I’m a cynic. I can’t help it.  I love, love, LOVE how she develops her characters. You really delve into their personalities through Kate’s eyes—and occasionally Keller’s eyes, which brings me to a quick warning to you as a reader: with each chapter header, she puts the name of the person whose perspective it is in parentheses. Pay attention to this! I missed a chapter where it was from Keller’s point of view (his first time showing up, I believe), and I couldn’t figure out why Kate was finding another girl to be attractive when it had been made perfectly clear that she was straight. LOL! This ended up being something funny for me, as I eventually went back and re-read the chapter, understanding it was from Keller’s POV. So, yeah, while it was fun, it definitely pulled me out of the story briefly while I tried to figure it out. (And it’s not Kim Holden’s fault—she laid it all out there and I just missed it!) I adore Gus. (I’m kicking myself for not picking up her second book, Gus, while at UtopYA. I’m very glad she lives here in Denver so that I can stalk her down pick it up and see if she might be willing to come do an interview for For The Love and also maybe snag her autograph on said copy. I have no shame.  ) But seriously, I adore Gus. I love everything about him. He’s exactly the kind of friend I’ve had, and I can see so much in him. A character I’ve written is very similar, too. That may have been part of what drew me in so succinctly. In so many ways, I can relate to Kate. In person, to the outside world, I’m always about living in the moment, putting on a smile, acting the extrovert, etc. The difference is, I think Kate isn’t acting. She genuinely is that way. I find that both exhilarating and daunting. Keller. What can I say about Keller? He’s me, in many ways. I know that sounds strange, but if you know me at all, and you’ve read this book, then you know why I say this. Life is hard. I can’t say too much without giving away Spoilers, so I’ll save that bit for my Spoilers section. Even the sub-plot characters had great development. Kim Holden really has a way of bringing them to the surface and making you care about everyone—even the ones you don’t want to care about! She really makes a point of showing the old adage, “Everyone has something going on behind-the-scenes that you don’t know about. Never judge by what you see.” Do I recommend this book? Absolutely. And yeah, it wouldn’t hurt to have some Kleenex nearby.

Reviewed by Francesca and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog Just break my heart why don’t you?  I had decided I would read this for #rollbackweek and then I didn’t do it.  But my friend Trish (who was supposed to do a buddy read with me) went ahead and read on schedule and then kept pestering me to read this.  Of course, I had gotten the warning that there was so much crying her eyes were swollen and red and her daughter might’ve texted asking me what happened to her mommy.  I just said give her a hug. So I picked it up.  And I immediately fell in love with the characters.  I fell in love with Kate, and with her best friend Gus.  And the fact that he calls her Bright Side.  And the fact that you can tell even with the distance between them that he loves her deeply.  I was smitten. Katie is originally from San Diego, CA but decides to go to college in Minnesota.  This story starts when she’s starting college.  Not knowing anyone in this new town.  Trying to find a job and make friends.  But as Gus likes to refer to her as, Bright Side, she easily has a group of people just eating out of her sweet hand.  She is a lovable girl, she wants to have fun and live life to the fullest. No regrets.  And she teaches those she comes in contact with to embrace that as well. Throughout this book and this beautiful story we slowly see as she falls in love with Keller.  He has his own secrets.  I have to say, honestly, it took me a while to warm up to the idea of Keller as the love interest because I was sooooo smitten with Gus.  And no, this is not a love triangle.  As the story progresses they both take a spot in my heart and just won’t let go.  But as I said before, I’m smitten with Gus.  Can’t help it. Kate’s journey will make you laugh and will warm your hart.  But just like my friend warned me about, it also stomped on my heart more than a few times.  The tears I cried, the sobs at 3am that woke up my husband.  He took one look at me, saw I wouldn’t take my eyes off my Kindle and went back to sleep.  All while sobbing and crying, which made continuing to read quite difficult.  I even had to pry my eyes open so that I could read through the tears.  I couldn’t stop.  This merits a warning.  Make sure you are not reading this book in public, it’s one of my ugliest ugly cries. BRIGHT SIDE is a devastatingly good story.  It’s not a happy book.  But I don’t regret one minute that I spent getting to know these characters.  Being part of this ride.  Letting them take over my life and my heart.  If your heart is up for it, then give this book a try.  It’s my favorite tear jerker in quite some time! Thanks Trish for pushing my ass to read it.  I don’t think I’ve ever found such a sad book to be so fulfilling and uplifting to see it end the way this did.  A fair warning here, this is not an HEA. Now…. bring on book two because I need some happy sauce to go with these tears!   And someone give me a hug.

An Epic Read!! This book absolutely wrecked me and I am not quite sure I have been put back together yet. Bright Side is by far one of the best books I have ever read!! It will stay with me forever. It has joined my list of favorite books EVAH!! Wow!! What a powerful and emotionally-gripping book. The characters in this book are so well developed. You feel for them. They are your best friends and family. You want them to triumph over everything. You want them to DO EPIC!! Kate Sedgwick is one of the absolute best heroines that has ever been written. Keller Banks...what a beautiful, brave man!! I absolutely loved Keller Banks. However, I have to admit that Gus Hawthorne stole my heart!! He is such a special person. For anyone to have someone like Gus in his or her live that person has truly been blessed. What a giving individual. My goodness...the man is just gorgeous--inside and out!! I have to say even the secondary characters were marvelous. esp. Shelly, Duncan, Clayton (loved him), Morris, Stella (OMG!! Too cute for her own good), Peter, Audrey, and the rest of Rook. I can honestly say that Kim Holden DID EPIC when she wrote this book. Bright Side is a must read!! If you have not yet read Bright Side, I can honestly say that you are missing out on one of the best books ever written. I cannot wait to read Gus' book or anything else that Kim Holden puts out, but I seriously need Gus' book!! Great job on a great book.

I know it's only February, and we have a lot of year left to go, but I can already say that this book is easily going to be my favorite read of 2015. I'm sure you're sitting there going, seriously? What makes this book so great? What makes this book so great is that what Holden was able to do was take something that can so easily break us as humans and turn it into something so hopeful and beautiful you want to share it with everyone you meet.  Bright Side tells the story Kate, such an upbeat optimistic person that her best friend Gus has given her the nickname of Bright Side. The book follows her through her first semester away for college. Of course she falls for the handsome boy she meets while there (in this case his name is Keller), makes friends, goes to class, all of the normal unremarkable things young people do in their 20's. So what makes this book so remarkable then? It's the character's and the life that Holden breaths into them that makes them so special. Kate makes you want to be a better person. Her attitude and the manner in which she approaches her life are inspirational, and I implore you not to be affected by her in some way by the time you have finished with this book. The other thing that makes this book amazing is the cast of supporting characters. There are plenty of amazing one's, but for the purpose of this review I'm going to focus on the two men in her life, Gus and Keller. Gus who she has known for her entire life and Keller the young man she meets after leaving for college. I'm sure you're thinking, I HATE triangles. But that's not what this book is. To me these relationships represent something so much more than a stupid love triangle at the end of the day. It's the difference between the love we feel for those who have known us our whole lives and the love we feel when we experience our first adult relationship. Both equally important yet still very different.  Fair warning, keep the tissues handy because you are going to need them. For me, I should have bought stock in Kleenex at about the 80% marl. But please don't let the fact that you don't want to "ugly cry" detract you from reading this book. Holden's words truly reach into your soul and leave an imprint the minute you read them and don't diminish once you have read that last one. And those are the greatest books to me. The ones that leave you changed for the better after having read them.  I truly loved this book, and if you are looking for something original and heartfelt then you just found your next read.

5 stars  BEST & MUST READ I am still not sure what to put in a review for this book and I finished it over a month ago.  It still makes me tear up when I think about it.  It was one of those books that will be with you for the rest of your life.  It not only makes you realize that you need to be more aware of what you have but to also not take for grant things that are in front of you right now.  It will test your faith in life and will show you that love is truly unconditional.   Kate Sedgwick is Bright Side any way you look at it.  She has the ability to shine bright no matter what is going on.  She will brighten any room she walks into.  She will make you wish that you had a friend like her in your life.  Kate has had a hard life but always looks for the good in everything that she has endured.  So when she moves to a small town to go to college she never thought she would fall in love but life has away of giving us just what we need at the right time. Keller Banks loved before but what happens when he meets someone that is able to show him there is always hope?  This is exactly what Kate does for Keller.  Kate shows Keller things he thought he would never fell again or maybe he never truly felt them before.  When their friendship turns into more, there are secrets between them that may destroy them both. And Gus.  Oh sweet Gus.  He has been Kate’s best friend from the very beginning and the growth and love that he shows through out the book is remarkable.  He would do anything for his Bright Side; even keep the truth from her about his true love for her.   This story will have you questions how you look at your own life.  And please keep a box of tissue ready.  I actually need a few as I write these.  The tears are running down my face.  This is truly one of the BEST books I have ever read!!!  I can looking forward to reading more from this amazing author.
