Overview

Baby-killer. Ex-con. Joe Brody has been called a lot of things. Some true. Some not. But now that he's out of prison and back in his hometown his focus is getting a job and a home for his ill father to convalesce. Easier said than done when no one will hire him.

Ashley Cade has a teething toddler and lives with an elderly man as part of an agreement she made to buy his house. Complicated? Not as much as it sounds. Wilson is a dear and his huge Victorian a gem in the rough. The lonely old man even recommends a friend's son as a handyman to help with the repairs and finally Ashley is making progress. And Joe? Joe is... intriguing to say the least.

But when the police chief tracks Joe down and Ashley discovers the truth, everything changes. Wilson swears Joe is innocent. Joe swears he's innocent. But the evidence says otherwise and she doesn't know who to believe when her child's life--and her future business--are at stake....

About the Author

Kay Lyons always wanted to be a writer, ever since the age of seven or eight when she copied the pictures out of a Charlie Brown book and rewrote the story because she didn’t like the plot. Through the years her stories have changed but one characteristic stayed true— they were all romances. Each and every one of her manuscripts included a love story.?

Published in 2005 with Harlequin Enterprises, Kay’s first release was a national bestseller. Kay has also been a HOLT Medallion, Book Buyers Best and RITA Award nominee.

Kay Lyons' story was well developed with a unique twist for the plot. Joe was released early from jail for good behavior. He had served 10 of his15 year sentence. He had been found guilty of murdering his daughter, Josie. He had returned to his hometown to start again. He was facing a wall of bias with no home, no employer willing to hire him, and little money. Ashley was another young widow created by the continuous wars in the Middle East. She had been orphaned as a young girl and she met her husband at the State home where he was after losing his family. Although Mac was six years older, they reconnected when he came to eat where she was a waitress. They had celebrated one anniversary but he had died before they celebrated their second. Soon after she found out he had not left her aline. She was pregnant. Ashley and her husband made plans for their future together. They wanted a home for their family. Although her husband had been killed, she had his son, Max, and she found their home. It needed to be rennovated, but she planned on opening a B &B (Bed and Breakfast) in this small town that was close to vacation designations. Ashley needed a handyman, and good fortune had sent Joe. His dad had stored their family belongings with Mr. Wilson, who she had purchased her home from. He had dropped by at the most opportune time. Ashley had just fixed her sink's plumbing when disaster struck. The pipe joints had not held and the floor was flooding. She couldn't find the shut off valve, and Mr. Wilson's directions on finding the water main was confusing. Joe saved the day for her a SECOND time in one day. Joe and Ashley made a deal to allow Ashley to use Joe's construction skills to get her B&B rennovated by Spring. He would receive a small stipend with his room and board as payment. His postponment in telling Ashley about why he went to prison loomed in his mind. Ashley pondered on if she was ready to start new and place her widow weeds away. This was a great story, and it did nothave explicit sex. It was entertaining and the characters are well developed. A beautiful ending. I heartily recommend this story.

4.5 stars. This story was really super. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Was a little uncomfortable with all the physical parts (which were in abundance), but it was still a really good novel.
