Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid derivative closely related to morphine, and is obtained from thebaine after a seven-step chemical procedure. For two decades it has been used to treat moderate to severe pain and as an anesthetic, but has recently caught the attention of the drug addiction industry and is widely available on the black market as well as in treatment centers. Pharmacologists and other specialists, most from France, where some 70,000 heroin addicts are currently treated with the drug, provide a broad reference on its use in addiction treatment by reviewing the pharmacology, controlled studies, clinical observations and experience, drug delivery, analytical challenges, and postmortem forensic toxicology.
