Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy Series #1) by Ilona Andrews

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn't sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she's kidnapped by Connor "Mad" Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan's after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she's getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

About the Author

"Ilona Andrews" is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge—and are working on the next volumes for both. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

Forget about the whitewashed cover and the not-so-stellar title. This is a fun and good read, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My favorite part, hands down, was Nevada’s voice and her relationship with her family. That felt like the emotionally truest part of the book, though I did also enjoy watching her struggle to understand the utter sociopath she has to work with. (The sociopath is also the love interest. I still haven’t decided how I feel about that, but I’m very glad Nevada rebuffed him [multiple times, and all the way up to the last few pages].) I liked that he seemed to have layers beyond powerful/gorgeous/rich/etc. He made jokes, and I got the feeling he was fond of gallows humor, but he was also practical to a fault. That practicality caused plenty of friction—not the sexy or good kind—between him and Nevada, and that was fascinating to watch. Nevada is fundamentally good, which is not usually my cup of tea. However, for this series she is going to be perfect. There is so much badness in the people and the other characters already that to see her struggle against the horrible outcomes that are threatened is wholly refreshing. As the narrator as well as the main character, she is our lifeline and our entertainment, and she plays both parts well. I also found the plot more compelling than I expected to. In my experience, characters who “have no choice” or are otherwise coerced into something they don’t want to do aren’t usually as boxed in as they should be to warrant that kind of despairing response. I didn’t get that from Nevada. She tried and failed to wiggle her way out of the inciting incident, and then she let everyone she spoke to know that she was doing what she did under protest. Of course, at a certain point she has to own that the stakes have been raised and that she has her own motives to continue on her path, but she does that quite well. I bought and related to her motives entirely. Overall: there were some weird parts—womanly-this and maleness-that, the mostly-forced-seeming sexual tension between Nevada and the sociopath—but I’ll definitely pick up the sequel when it comes out. (In e-book form, because ugh, that cover.)

Following the first-person point of view of Nevada, a 25 y/o P.I. in a magic infused version of contemporary Houston, the story mainly focuses on cracking the plot to destroy the city. As a secondary thread (but a strong one), it sets up the attraction between Nevada and Rogan--but if you're expecting anything along that line in the first third of the book, you'll be disappointed. The romance aspect of this book is set up to start a *romance series* not be a *romance novel* if you understand the distinction I'm trying to make.

Book is awesome. There's a hint of sexy in it but it isn't a fluffy romance novel at all. It's a fun read with a number of interesting character relationships and a twisty plot. Great fun. Goofy cover - especially considering the leads are pretty at odds most of the book. Though there is one scene which may have looked like that...way out of context.

*I read this book for my own enjoyment. I love that Nevada has a great family. There are 2 sisters, 2 cousins, her mom, and her grandma all living together. They have strong and different personalities. But they are also the reason Nevada takes the job she does. She wants to take care of them all, being the oldest child... and maybe some guilt in there too. But she loves them and wants they cared for as best as possible. Hahaha. Nevada and Mad Rogan. I love the banter between these two. Of course he gets off on a bad footing when they first meet, but Nevada won't take any of his crap. I love this as she's a strong personality. Mad Rogan has gotten under her skin though. She finds his eyes, and maybe other parts, attention holding. Then there's the sexy yet "guilty" party that Nevada's to bring in. Adam Pierce. Oh he is a hoot. He's so full of himself. Then there's Mad Rogan. Oh my. He is a man to dream about. And what his magic can do... Well, it's dangerous. He's definitely got a few other issues though. But that makes him a good contrast for Nevada. It's like she's teaching him to be a human being as the story goes. I love how Nevada's view on these two different men are written and perceived from Nevada's eyes. This influences how we feel about them, though I do still smile at Adam's flirting as Grandma just loves him. I enjoyed the story and the strong personality interaction with Nevada and Mad Rogan, after I let the kidnapping go in my mind. The kidnapping... ugh. It was rough, but it ended well. I *guess* Mad Rogan isn't as bad a guy as thought. But once I was past this, I can see why women are attracted to Rogan. The book had a few great points to make that felt to hit the heart. Nevada is a strong willed woman. She sees things and points them out. Like the woman that still fall over Mad Rogan because of who he is, looks like, and can do even after he's cruel to them. Seriously. Nevada even points out the response to his mean actions and woman are better than that. That the woman should care more about herself and he doesn't need to act like that. Even family points, loving each other and caring for each other. Nevada's sisters and cousins are still in school (of some sort). It's great at advice that's given at times when those characters are in the scene. I love the family aspect. The magic system is complex and we get to learn it as we go. This author team gives us the pieces we need of the system with each scene so we can learn it through the characters and world instead of dropping it all in our laps. This works better for me as a reader. And I know there's more to learn, which will come with each book. The beginning felt like the story wasn't going anywhere. No, not that. It felt as the case Nevada was put on was going to go nowhere. There were no leads, no tips, nothing to work with. Nevada has contacts and makes things happen though. We still didn't get the whole picture of what's going on. We get a solution to Nevada's one purpose on the case, but we are left holding the bag wanting to know the BIG picture. The ending felt really fast for me. I'll have to reread the epilogue and last chapter again and pull it apart. Am I excited for the next book? Absolutely! I enjoyed Nevada and her life adventures. I'm curious as to what the bigger picture is and what troubles will be in the near future. I'll be picking the next book up.

As I was listening to this audiobook I was hit with that sense of déjà vu.  Sure enough, after a quick search of my Goodreads account, I found that I read this book back in 2014.  Needless to say, pieces were familiar but I needed a refresher, the audiobook was a great way to do that. In a world where magic rules and might makes right, Nevada Baylor finds herself in a no-win situation.  She is forced to apprehend a rampaging prime who is determined to destroy the city or lose her business, her home, and her and her family’s livelihood.  On top of that another incredibly powerful, scary, rich and delicious prime named “Mad” Rogan, had his sights set on Nevada’s target.  Her week couldn’t get any worse.   This was an incredibly good story, that was fast paced and packed full of action and sexual tension.  Nevada and Rogan make sparks on the page and I can’t wait for them to get together.  The anticipation is killing me. I have already purchased the next novel and can’t wail.  I am rating Burn for Me 5 Boundless Stars, I loved it!

My Disclaimer: I was provided a free copy of this book by the author’s newsletter. I am voluntarily providing an honest review in which all opinions are fully my own. I am not being compensated in any way. ~ Judi E. Easley for Blue Cat Review My Review: ✭✭✭✭⭑ I’ve had this book for awhile, and I’m pretty sure I read it several years ago in paperback. But I no longer have paperbacks around, so I can’t check that. And I didn’t enter it in my GoodReads list, so I can’t check it there. But, I have read some of the Kate Daniels series and I’m pretty sure I read this when it came out. But I read it again last week. Reading anything by this author is never a waste of time. It’s always going to be a good read. I was not disappointed. The world they built for this trilogy is amazing! It’s a dystopian world based in Houston, TX. The magic system is quite wide-ranging as far as what people are capable of doing. And people can have more than one type of magic. It seems like there are an awful lot of not very nice people around in these days. Nevada Baylor and her assorted family members are quite quirky. Her grandmother modifies large vehicles, like armored trucks and tanks. Her mother is an army veteran, a sniper who spends a lot of time trying to keep her various children from causing trouble. Nevada has two teenaged sisters who just need to survive being teenagers and let their magic settle to be human. She has two cousins living with her as well. One whose magic keeps him busy with their computers and one who doesn’t seem to think he has any magic. They live in a warehouse and run the private investigations business out of there as well. Connor Rogan is one heck of a power. The army made him into the perfect weapon with no off switch. Now he’s home from war and on his own as head of his house. He chooses his own battles. He’s decided Nevada would make a good weapon in his latest battle, so he tries to acquire her in his forthright way. Or would that be forceful way? And Nevada doesn’t respond to force very well. But she looks into his eyes and sees what others have missed. She looks at him and sees things she likes and decides to be acquired in her own way. She finds his off switch and they leave most of Houston still standing. Once she and Rogan start working together towards the same goal, things get fun. They shoot sparks and steam and all sorts of things. Everyone loves to stand around and watch it happen, too. So read this book and then you’ll do the same thing I did. You will immediately need book two, White Hot.

Ilona Andrews lives up to her reputation set forth by her previous masterpieces. This book contains it all. There's the buildup of romance, which isn't overwhelming or unrealistic. The world building isn't confusing. I am dying to read the second book. Kate Daniel's has been my favorite series since the start and I didn't think any book could rival the series. This book came out of nowhere and sucked me in. The Alpha male lived up to my expectations and the heroine was a badass investigator. If you're looking for action, romance, and suspense, it's all here! You won't regret the purchase.

This book is amazing. I could barely stop reading it. It was hard to put down from the beginning. I wish there was more sex scenes in it but all of these story lines are unbelievably exciting.

What is there not to love about this book! It definitely has moved to the top of my favorites pile! The world is like ours, but people have various magical abilities and basically a person's worth is determined by how strong their magic is. It's very easy to fall into this make-believe world and lose yourself in the story. I loved Nevada. She is spunky, sassy and real, with a soft heart. She can take care of herself, but doesn't do any of the too stupid to live things that so many heroines are guilty of. I also like that although she fell into lust for the main male character, Rogan, she doesn't fall immediately into his arms. She realizes that to give her heart to him would be detrimental to her, so she keeps him at a romantic distance as they work together. This action packed story kept me reading well into the night. It's laced with humor, which had me giggling out loud at times. The side characters of Nevada's grandma, mom, sisters and cousins are a great addition and brought a touch of caring and witty banter to the book. Overall, it's the perfect blend of a non-stop action filled plot, electric tension between a kick-butt heroine and steamy hot hero and an emotionally charged dialog. As usual the Ilona Andrews team hits it out of the ballpark with another can't-put-down read!!

Nevada has saved her family's business and is working hard to make sure money keeps coming in. She's a private detective with a special skill that is incredibly useful when she needs to interrogate people. In a world filled with magic and class systems that are based on power she tries to keep a roof over her family's head. In order to prevent them from being evicted she has to go after a powerful Prime, someone with the highest magical ranking, and bring him back alive. Will Nevada have the skills to pull this off? Nevada isn't the only one who is chasing her target. When another Prime, Mad Rogan, captures Nevada she doesn't have much choice, she has to work with him in order to survive. Together they go after their mutual suspect. However, there's plenty of attraction between them and it isn't wise for Nevada to get involved with a Prime. She's sure it won't end well and she isn't interested in a broken heart. Can she resist Rogan long enough to make her mission succeed? Burn for Me is a gripping story about magic, passion and mystery. Nevada is tough, she's got an iron will, she loves her family very much, and therefore doesn't mind to shoulder a lot of responsibility, and she is incredibly smart and gifted. When she meets Mad Rogan she knows there's a connection, but being with a Prime usually ends with a nasty breakup. Rogan is persistent and used to getting what he wants, but Nevada isn't afraid to speak her mind and knows how to keep her distance. I loved their chemistry, their game of pushing and pulling and their amazing ability to work together. They're impressive main characters and I really enjoyed reading about them. Burn for Me is set in an interesting society. I loved the class system based on magic and liked reading about the different kind of powers people can have. The world building is admirable, Ilona Andrews has plenty of brilliant skills in this area. Something else I absolutely loved about this book are the combat scenes. They're realistic and vivid and reading them kept me on the edge of my seat. Every detail in an Ilona Andrews book is always exactly as it should be and that makes the stories perfect for me, Burn for Me is no exception. I highly recommend the Hidden Legacy series.

Burn for Me is set in our contemporary world, but there are some slight differences. Hierarchy is created by how much psychic and magical power you hold. The levels of power are ranked, the highest being a Prime. These Prime families have bred to increase their psychic relevance, giving their family power, and with that power, money. Just as there are black sheep in normal families, in a Prime family, those black sheep can be almost unstoppable. Nevada Baylor’s investigative agency is hired to bring in a Prime that has become dangerous to society, and himself. Nevada is pretty low on the magical rictor scale, she is a lie detector. A very useful tool as an investigator, but non threatening. While searching for her target, she becomes the focus of another Prime, Mad Rogan, a man famous for becoming a mass murderer in the last war. Rogan is also searching for her target and after several threats on her life, they end up working this gig together. Ilona Andrews writes engaging fantasy fiction with a hint of sexual tension. Their books are not bodice rippers, thank god. The fiction is power packed, engaging, original, and fun, but the sexual content is pretty subtle. However, as the tension heats up, you feel it! Nevada and Baylor have great sexual tension. Initially, he is not a very likable guy, but as he lets down his guard, we get a glimpse of the man behind the powerful facade, and he is very engaging. Nevada, although her power doesn’t pack a physical punch as Rogan’s does, has a vibrant personality and is no lap dog. She works hard to make a living for her family, and when her family is threatened, she goes all in, embracing her inner dragon. The verbal warfare between these two characters is snappy and fun! She is trying to stop his interest in her and he only keeps getting more infatuated- the dialog sizzles! I loved getting to know these characters again. Book two comes out in May, book three in July. This is a series that is worth purchasing and I have already pre-ordered my copies. If you haven’t read Burn for Me, put it at the top of your TBR list. You will eat it up!
