Callimaco, nato a Cirene nell'ultimo scorcio del VI secolo a.C. e vissuto ad Alessandria d'Egitto, fu uno straordinario filologo, erudito ed enciclopedista attivo presso la più importante biblioteca dell'antichità. Fu anche poeta di rilievo, teorico della superiorità del componimento breve e raffinato sul poema epico grave e prolisso. Quasi tutta la sua produzione in prosa è andata perduta, mentre ci resta parte del corpus in versi.
