Miss Temperance Flowerdew is on her way to work when a stranger suddenly grabs her off the street and sends her on a Chicago-bound train before she can figure out what happened.

When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind the abduction, they're seen alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.

Gilbert is willing to propose marriage--except Temperance will have none of it. She's finally stepped out of the shadow of her relations and won't give up her independence. But when it becomes clear the misunderstanding in Chicago has escalated into a threat on her life and followed her to New York, accepting Gilbert's help in solving the mystery may lead to more than she ever could have dreamed.

This is a wonderful historical romantic comedy! I love the variety of quirky characters that this author has created for this series. It was so much fun looking in on them all again and catching up with the main characters from both of the earlier books. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Miss Temperance Flowerdew and Mr. Gilbert Cavendish take center stage in this final book in the series. Temperance has come out of her shell and is letting her natural character traits shine forth for all of New York to see. She gets into the most amazingly hilarious situations that kept me laughing. At times it was laugh-out-loud funny and had people giving me very strange looks. Gilbert has his own peculiar traits that he is working hard to tame so that he can connect with Temperance better. His efforts are just as funny as Temperance’s situations. He is steady and by her side throughout the story. They find themselves in many dangerous situations which seems to be typical of this author’s writing style. They are surrounded by a number of staunch friends and supporters that are willing to step in and help immediately.

Caught by surprise by Jen Turano Thought from the summary of this book it was not one I'd be enjoying, thinking of abduction and things smilar to SVU from tv shows. I was totally wrong and this is a fun read. Temperance is abducted and Gilbert is the one to find her-in Chicago. She tells him of her ordeal, her old time friend who they grew up together. Just when you think the Pinkerton man has found the culprits other clues come into play. and just when you think it's been solved again, MORE clues are told. So many secrets from the past come to light making the mysteries believeable. Love hearing of how astritic she is in everything she touches. Like mention of the Vanderbilts and Astors from Newport, RI and their cottages-we had just visited one of the marble mansions and I can see how theses characters would fit right in. This book is not only about Temperance but others, Clementine and all the others who come to play a part. So many twists and turns, very unpredictable. I was able to listen to this from the National Library Service and each character had their own voice-was a fun read for me. Although this is book 3 it can be read as a stand alone. recommended by

Man, I love Jen Turano’s books!! They’re somehow period-accurate, while also being witty and sassy and funny! This book is book 3 in the Apart From the Crowd series, and I think it might be my favorite! Temperance and Gilbert are bantery, and there’s suspense, and fancy dresses, and EEEE it’s all just so fun! I also enjoyed the guest appearances that the characters from previous books in the series made. One of my favorite thing about this series is how each of the characters is so distinct, even in the time frame they’re in. Most books/people in that time period emphasize on being conventional, and fitting in, and whatever, but all of the characters in this book have their own personalities, and are memorable in their own way! The story itself was also really fun: from kidnappings to shootings to really really bad “villains,” there were just twists and turns all around that made the book so fun! The ending was also SO FUN! This book is the last book in the trilogy, and I definitely recommend reading the trilogy in order, so that you can catch all of the inside jokes/references! My Rating- 8/10 Thank you to the publisher, Bethany House, for providing me with a free e-copy of this book via NetGalley in excahnge for an honest review; I was not required to write a positive review. Another fun, fast novel from Jen Turano Since I read A Change of Fortune, Jen’s first book, I’ve been a huge fan. I love the characters she creates and especially the female friendships that are a central point of all the plots. The camaraderie between friends is true and heartwarming. Whenever I want to read a fun, fast, well-written story, I know that a Jen Turano book will deliver. Caught by Surprise did not disappoint. As usual, there were twists and turns that made for laugh-out-loud reading. Her dialog is fresh and at time delightfully unexpected. I loved revisiting characters from her previous books. Yes, get yourself a copy, and enjoy. I did!

This is book 3 of a series by Jen Turano and I really enjoy her writing. It starts out with, what I thought, a great cover. This book has action and adventure in it. There are twists and turns that are fun to follow. There is romance in the devotion that Gilbert has for Temperance. It was enjoyable to watch their relationship go up and down and up and down and up throughout the book. If you’re in for a LONG book that takes a while to complete, then this just might be the book for you. Actually, you might want to start with book 1 and work your way through the whole series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

True to form, the third installation of Apart from the Crowd begins with an outlandish surprise, yet managed well by an intelligent, level-headed Temperance Flowerdew. She is rescued from her dilemma by her childhood friend Gilbert Cavendish. The book continues as the situation returns to rights, but their relationship consumes much of the rest of the story, along with several mysteries that evolve. This novel is set in New York City in the 1880s, in a high-society background. As such, the characters' speech patterns are very particular, and much of the book is dialog. It seemed that it took me longer to read this book because of that style, but when the hilarity ensues, the plot twists, and the mysteries are solved, it is worth it. Fans of Jen Turano's writing will want to read this book, as well as historical romance readers. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

This story may very well be my favorite of Jen Turano's to date. Temperance is my favorite wallflower. Her artistic abilities endear her to me in a special way. But beyond that, this story is so full of plot twists you will want to read this in one sitting. (Which is easier to do on audio for me.) Gilbert Cavendish likes order and organization. He lives by his lists and well thought out plans. So when Temperance Flowerdew comes barreling back into his life, he is shaken to his core. Temperance Flowerdew is just the slightest bit stubborn. Which I, of course, can't relate to in the slightest...*cough*cough*... She has survived so much heartache. By God's grace, she is finding life and purpose again. And oh! What a life it is! Full of color, love, spirit, and confidence. There were numerous times while reading I was found laughing out loud and then gasping in shock then next minute, it's a wonder my husband doesn't think I'm crazy (well...we won't get into that). Jen Turano is by far one of the most talented authors that I know. To weave humor, romance, subterfuge, and danger so seamlessly is brilliant! Not to mention several twists that will catch you by surprise. If you are looking for a good story that will give you laughs while giving you a grand adventure, you won't want to miss this book. I received a complimentary copy of Caught by Surprise from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Jen Turano is a name I turn to when I need a light-hearted, whimsical, and thoroughly entertaining book. Caught by Surprise does not disappoint. With preposterous situations and amazingly mismatched protagonists, Turano has recreated her hilarious world, and we all want to enter for the rollicking ride she provides. Turano starts her tale by giving her heroine the rather oxymoronic-name, Temperance. Temperance is anything but. Impetuosity could be her middle name. Gilbert Cavendish, on the other hand, lives by lists. Starting with a botched abduction, this fanciful novel moves along smoothly with breaks only for howls of laughter. Highly recommended! It is not imperative to read the books that come before, but if you do, you will enjoy meeting up with old friends. I was gifted a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. No positive review was required and all opinions are solely my own.

One of the things I have enjoyed most about Caught by Surprise is the fact that Temperance and Gilbert have been friends since childhood. Sharing a mutual respect and admiration for one another that is evident in their words and actions, their genuine love for each other was deeply felt by this reader and it stirred my emotions time and again. The quips exchanged between the two brought forth more than one audible chuckle, and perhaps an actual guffaw or two. ;-) Turano has a natural ability when it comes to pacing a story. It is always expeditiously done with plenty of humor, thoughtfulness, laughter, quirky scenes, and much grace. I highly recommend Caught by Surprise, the final book in the Apart from the Crowd series. It is lighthearted entertainment yet inspirational, full of sound truths delivered in a gentle and whimsical manner. I do recommend reading the series from the beginning so you get the full flavor of the characters. You will fall in love with ALL of them and be asking for more. I received a paperback copy from the publisher. No review required. No compensation received.

The dialogue between characters is what gets me going every time! This author knows how to write it! Another fabulous story with amazing and memorable characters. Heart twisting suspense and sparking romance in perfect harmony. Some fabulous twists make this a non-predictable story line! Another bookshelf keeper here.

If you are familiar with the author you know that her characters are fun, independent and very opinionated. Well I'm talking about the women in her stories. I love how she makes them strong, funny, and at times unpredictable. Temperance is a perfect name for our main character. Her temper is quick but she knows what she wants. Now how did she find herself kidnapped ? Temperance loves adventure but I'm sure this is not what she had in mind. I laughed so hard as she is whisked away on an adventure that will keep readers entertained with her shenanigans. The author has created a character that is such fun I have decided I want to join her on her trip. She would be such a hoot to travel with. Gilbert takes it upon himself to save the damsel in distress. Has anyone told Gilbert that Temperance can handle herself just fine? He is in for some real fun and games as he travels with Temperance. I loved when Gilbert asked Temperance, " You'll stay out of trouble?' Oh Temperance you have stolen my heart with your full of life heart and adventure that will send you on a journey you will not expect. Now lets examine this tangled tale before we go any further in the story. Did you miss the part where Temperance was kidnapped, but the wrong woman was kidnapped. So who was the real person who was to be kidnapped and why? Gilbert is so focused on marrying Temperance to keep people from talking about why they were traveling on the train together, that he forgot to investigate why it even happened in the first place. Now on to the story folks. I see a mystery has emerged and it is getting good. Someone is not telling the truth and just what are they hiding? Is it time to take this kidnapping serious? Well I for one want to tell Temperance to watch her back. Something fishy is going on and it doesn't look good for Temperance right now. One of the best parts of the entire story is the tug of war between Temperance and Gilbert. He is all for protecting her and, well we know Temperance. She is fighting him all the way. Just a little advice, Temperance, I love your independence, but for goodness sake let the poor man protect you. I don't know why but they remind me of Lucy and Ricky. I am enjoying every moment of this book and love how gifted the author is by giving us characters we can laugh with, cheer for and pray with. This story is filled with intrigue, is unpredictable and danger lurking around every corner. Can Temperance and Gilbert solve the mystery before they get hurt? Why are family members out to get them? It's getting harder to trust family members when they seem to be deceitful. Don't miss this great adventure that will keep you entertained while trying to unravel the mystery surrounding Temperance. I received a copy of this book from the author and Bethany House. The review is my own opinion.

I am glad to see Temperance coming into her own in Caught by Surprise. We've seen her on the sidelines for two books, and I've been waiting for the day to see her burst out; it's finally here. I will spare you all of the puns rolling about in my head that have to do with temper- so many definitions, and the verb, and as a prefix...I digress. Jen delivers another entertaining read that, while a bit predictable, has enough twists to keep you guessing and a steadily stoking romance. This story has a slower pace romance, in my opinion, for a Jen book, but she makes an art out of tension. So for those of you who prefer that with the kisses few and far between, like a kettle simmering, you'll want to put this on your to-read list. If you're looking for a light funny read that makes you smile beginning to end, also add it. If you prefer real-life grit and a box of Kleenex - still add it; you need a break from the drama. All of the lovable secondary characters have returned. I'm REALLLY hoping that some day we get to read about an older romance focused on Mr. Barclay (hint, Jen! While you're at it there are some lovable secondary characters from other series I'd also like to see, so maybe just write a collection of novellas on them all?) Happy reading! I was provided a copy of this novel by the publisher. A positive review wasn't required. All opinions are mine.

Caught by Surprise by Jen Turano Apart from the Crowd Series Book Three Miss Temperance Flowerdew had forgotten how she used to love life and live it to the fullest. As a child, she would get into all kinds of trouble with her best friend, Gilbert. Then, her parents died, their fortune was gone, and she became a poor relative to distant cousins who treated her as their servant. But once she reunited with Gilbert at a party...the old Temperance came back. So did trouble. Mr. Gilbert Cavendish was a follow the rule guy. Lists, graphs, everything in his life was precise and by the book. Until he was asked to go and rescue an abducted daughter...Temperance's cousin. Suddenly life was all askew. And just as when they were kids, he found himself needing to rescue Temperance—from herself and others. I love Jen Turano's stories. She has fabulous characters that you just fall in love with. Great adventures that usually end up quite humorous. This story had a little more angst in it...what with the death of her parents and the mean extended family...but, it was as lively as ever and as always, a page-turner that I couldn't set down. **Received through NetGalley for an honest review

This author never disappoints me. I always know that I am going to love her books. This one is no different. I love the laughter throughout her stories. This has some great romance along with always giving me a laugh. This series has been wonderful. I am sorry to see the end of these characters. I will miss them all. Temperance and Gilbert were fantastic. Enjoy reading. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

I have been a huge fan of Jen Turano since I read and reviewed her first book A Change of Fortune. With each book the cast of characters are more delightful, entertaining, and will put you in a fit of stitches. I don't usually find others predicaments funny, like getting snatched off the street, but since these were characters and not real it was perfectly appropriate to laugh, and I mean laugh out loud. Which I did a lot of. One of the fun things about series is that we get to catch up with characters from the previous books in the series. And Ms. Turano places them in funny predicaments as well. So, just when you think you're done laughing, believe me you're not! I loved Temperance because she says and does what she wants, which definitely goes against society's norm. She's sassy and snarky, which is what I love in an heroine. The sweet friendship between Gilbert and Temperance was real and so endearing. I loved that he just didn't give up on her. He was a true knight in shining armor. The secondary characters were just as lovable as the main characters. They supported the story perfectly. My Bottom Line: I loved every minute of this story, and the characters. The suspenseful parts were like those of a cozy mystery which was delightful. The faith thread dealt with forgiveness of not only self but others. It was woven nicely throughout the book. I wasn't expecting a mystery at all, and I had no idea what was going to happen next. The crazy situations that all of the characters found themselves in were utterly hilarious. If you are looking for a "Calgon, take me away moment," look no further. This book is a perfect historical rom-com and I highly recommend it!

It may sound trite, but this book was so difficult to put down! Mystery, intrigue, shady individuals, and lots of laughter make for a great read. Wacky characters, loveable characters, characters that make you wonder “what were they thinking?!” They were all great. And author Jen Turano is a master at putting the reader in each scene of the book. Set in the Gilded Age (late 19th Century), if you enjoy historical fiction with light romance and enjoy laughing out loud then you have to read this book! I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Caught by Surprise by Jen Turano Mystery, attempted murder and mayhem My rating is 4.5 stars Temperance couldn’t care less that her reputation could end up in tatters after the compromising situation she and Gilbert were found in. (After all, it is the 1880’s and being found outside a hotel alone with a man is scandalous!) She wants much more than a marriage to avoid scandal. Even if said marriage is with her best friend since childhood. She wants love and romance and adventure! How in the world would that be possible with straight-laced, rule-following Gilbert? I loved Gilbert and the way he was so confounded by Temperance declining his proposal. Err, suggestion. After all, what matters more than doing what is expected and avoiding stirring up gossip and scandal? The poor man was pulled out of his comfort zone so many times in this story. Temperance was delightful. With her artistic nature and love of freedom, romance and adventure, she may have appeared a bit flighty, but she was truly resilient, having overcome quite a bit of hardship. Her zeal for life and the way she threw herself so completely into each thing she did made her very endearing. Her stubborn nature and temper not so much. Except to Gilbert, when he was honest with himself. This story was full of whimsical adventure, ridiculous situations (I mean that in a good way), mystery, attempted murder and plenty of mayhem. The bumbling criminals and devious relatives added to the interest. Characters from the previous books of the series played large parts in this story in a very welcome way. I found myself laughing out loud throughout the story. My only criticism was that the epilogue had too many loose ends to tie up and ended up cramming what appeared to be too many things into a short chapter. It seemed out of place with the delightful way the rest of the story was told. While it appears this may be the last of the books in this series, I am looking forward to whatever this author writes next. This is such a fun and engaging story! I was hooked from the very first page when Temperance is kidnapped right off the street and finds herself whisked away on a train bound for Chicago. Temperance Flowerdew quickly became my favorite wallflower. Hidden behind her quiet reserve beats the heart of a lioness. The loss of her parents affected her deeply and as a result, she hid within herself. It is only at being reunited with a childhood friend that she blooms and returns to her feisty personality. She is independent, impulsive and sassy! With a fun lively cast of characters, a mystery to solve and lots of laughs, this a story you will want on your keeper shelf to pull out to enjoy again and again! I give this delightful book 5-stars and strongly encourage you to pick up a copy! (I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. Caught by Surprise is a wildly appealing story of love and laughter for ladies everywhere. The longtime friendship between our hero and heroine is a solid foundation for robust banter and exasperated declarations. I highly recommend this story for everyone from teens to the young at heart. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. Caught by Surprise, by Jen Turano, is the third book in the Apart from the Crowd series though it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. Brimming with wit and humor, this book is simply a pleasure to read! Ms. Turano truly has a talent for shaping mere words into beautiful sentences that abound with significance and charm. This novel is certainly creative, captivating, and clever! Aptly titled, Caught by Surprise is enriched by a swiftly paced plot that is infused with scenes of intrigue, adventure, and numerous surprises. It is also a meaningful story of hope, second chances, and new beginnings. Above all, the characters in this novel sparkle like vibrant sea glass. Unique and multifaceted, the characters are utterly engaging and unforgettable. They possess endearing qualities that make them unconventional yet inspiring. Caught by Surprise is a wonderful piece of historical fiction that superbly balances elements of comedy, romance, faith, and suspense, making the story thoroughly readable and wholly entertaining. It is a delightful novel from beginning to end, and I enthusiastically recommend it to all readers. *I was given a copy of this novel from the publisher. A review was not required. The review I have written contains opinions that are entirely my own.

I love this writer. There is one problem I have with her books, I can only read them at home. If not I embarrass myself out in public. I cannot read her novels without laughing out loud. I don't mean a sweet little giggle, no, I laugh until I can't catch my breath. Maybe we have the same since of humor, I'm not sure what it is. I found this story to be the best one she has written, but I might have said that last time. If I'm having a bad week, I can pick up a Jen Turano book and reread it or just some parts. I am immediately taken on a fun and exciting journey. Even her characters have fun names. Temperence Flowerdew, a former wallflower is abducted and thrown into a carriage. She's later placed on a train and ends up in Chicago. Her life time best friend Gilbert Cavendish, in a roundabout way shows up and rescues her. The plot thickens, and there are a lot of who done it parts. I kept trying to figure it out, and I was delightfully surprised at the very end. I had so many favorite quotes, but I chose one that I hope doesn't contain too much of a spoiler. “We best be putting on our disguises, Mercy. It won't do us no good if she gets a look at out faces.” “It also won't do us no good if you keep forgetting to call me Vivian.” “It's apothecary,” Temperance called before she could stop herself, the words echoing eerily around the interior of the coffin. Dead silence was all that greeted her until someone cleared their throat. “You reckon that's God talking to us, Mercy.” “Don't be an idiot, Eugene, the voice came from the coffin.” Get this book, you will love it. I was so surprised and delighted when I won a copy, during a contest, from the author. Thanks Jen, for the book as well as the extra goodies you sent me.

I can always count on this author supplying me a fun story with quirky characters, laugh out loud situations, and sweet romance. This story was all of that. It was also a roller coaster ride the entire way. Just when I thought Temperance and Gilbert would find their way out of trouble, more would find them. In the end love conquers all and we get to enjoy a happy ever after for a beloved couple. Full review is at my website. I received this book complimentary from the author. I was not required to give a review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are my own.

If you want to read a book that will make you giggle, laugh, chuckle, and snort, then grab this one. I know I’m in for a good time when I read one of Jen Turano’s stories, but I was “caught by surprise” by how much I loved Temperance Flowerdew and all her cohorts. Temperance tickled my funny bone with her sassy, dry wit and her endearing mannerisms, while Gilbert stole my heart with his lists and his loyalty and devotion to Temperance. Fellow “wallflowers”, Gertrude Cadwalader and Permilia Griswold, make appearances in this book and add to the fun. I just love the names the author dreams up for her characters. They are so delightful and fit the personalities of the characters so well. Their attempts to navigate New York society in the Gilded Age kept me laughing through the entire book. A brilliantly funny story peopled with amusing, entertaining characters I won’t soon forget, Caught by Surprise is headed straight for my “keeper shelf!” This is the third and last book in the Apart From the Crowd series and can be read as a stand alone book, but why would you want to do that? Read all three of them to get the full impact of these three charming ladies and their friends. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
