This was recommended to me (by a retired teacher) as a book that any teacher would enjoy. I didn't like it, but then again, I'm not a teacher. When I was in school, they were the enemy. I never really liked Amanda Pepper, but obviously, it is a matter of taste.Amanda is a teacher at a private school specializing in the stupid children of wealthy parents. Perhaps it is her dislike of her pupils that put me off. She is also very down on the upper class generally, which readers may like or dislike, according to their nature.I never lived in Philadelphia, but my grandmother did, and I found this book extremely evocative of the place. A friend of mine lived in a townhouse just like Amanda Pepper's. The sense of place almost made up for the main character.

This book was different from what I usually read as far as mysteries go. It was a tad slow and dry but the main character did have some endearing qualities. The story wasn't very fast paced but there were some laughs and some cute one liners. I wouldn't not recommend it but i'm not sure i'll be rushing to read the next book in the series.

Gillian Roberts paints a great picture of Philadelphia and has created a character in Amanda Pepper that I hope will continue. The budding romance is another relationship I'd love to follow. If you like Gemma Halliday, Joanne Fluke and Janet Evanovich, you will love this new series. I can't wait for the next one.

Amanda Pepper is a thirty-year-old unmarried English teacher at elitist Philadelphia Prep and an amateur detective. She is a very likeable heroine and the book is consistently funny throughout. It is easy to understand why the author received an Anthony Award for best first mystery for this novel.
