About the Author

William Francis Butler (1838-1910) was Irish Lieutenant-General for the British Army. His career as an officer lasted nearly fifty years. He focused on educational causes after his retirement, and was knighted in 1906. His books include The Great Lone Land (1872), as well as a biography of Sir George Colley (1899) and an uncompleted autobiography.
