A Heartbreaker Bay Romance

Meet cute...

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry...

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot—chemistry he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself... just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener…just because she “gets” Spence immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

This is book #4, in the Heartbreaker Bay series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding of this fun series, I recommend reading this series in order. Colbie needs a break. A fresh start to give her a chance to breathe before returning to her smothering life. Where to go? What to do? Well... how about San Francisco? Spence sort of helps a dog cause a tourist to fall into their fountain. He feels bad. Then he feels attracted. Colbie is a beautiful, talented, funny, and amazing tourist he would like to get to know better. Where is this coming from? Even he doesn't know. This is a laugh out loud funny story! It can also be sexy and sweet Typical for this author, however. There is a reason she is a go-to favorite. Her characters are real people. We can all put ourselves in these circumstances and relate. I found these characters so much fun to read. And... re-visiting with some of the series favorites in here was great also. ***This early copy was given by Edelweiss and its publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Colbie Albright is tired of having to run her mom and brother's lives. All three of them are adults but ever since Colbie's father ran out on them, she has been the adult in the family. Now that she is a best selling author, she needs a break from her life, her family and New York City. Colbie decides to "runaway" to San Francisco, CA for a break. Shortly after arriving, Colbie is walking through the district of Cow Hollow wanting to see the crazy famed love legend fountain when a huge dog runs into her causing her to fall into the fountain. Guess who's walking the dog....Spencer Baldwin, one of San Francisco's top 10 most eligible bachelors! Spencer lives a quiet, simple life. He may be super rich from selling his company, but he has sworn off relationships after Clarissa did such a number on him. He would rather just be alone and invent new things and hang with his best friends. He never expected to meet a woman who has captured his interest in every way possible. Spencer realizes that she doesn't know who he is and he finds that refreshing. What he doesn't realize is that Colbie is actually famous too and since he doesn't know who she is, that is refreshing for her. These two quirky people find an instant connection and decide that for the three weeks that Colbie will be in town, they will hang out. Of course this quickly turns into much more, more than either of them ever thought could happen. Now they must both decide if this connection is worth keeping. I just adored both of these characters. Spencer is my perfect type of guy. Super smart, cute and just down right sweet and Colbie complimented him perfectly. I loved their happy ending!

Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis Series: Heartbreaker Bay Book 4 4.5 Stars - Spence, I was looking forward to his story. He is kind and sweet and focused on work and I loved that Colbie was a distraction. Being strong and caring, she was a good match for Spence. The two had wonderful chemistry and I really enjoyed the book. There were a few good laughs, some sigh worthy moments and a wonderful cast of characters. I mean come on, who doesn't love that crew of friends Spence has! I am looking forward to the next book in the series. ~Paragraphs and Petticoats~

3 stars -- Hmmm...this is going to be a hard review to write, b/c I just wasn't that sucked into this book, but I'm not entirely sure what didn't work for me.  I'll try, but it might have been that my mood exacerbated things, kwim?  Also, I think I *wanted* to like this one more than I actually did.  Now, I haven't read all the previous books in this series, only Willa's and the two Christmas novellas.  So perhaps that might have bumped it up a bit, but it also might have disappointed me even more...who's to say. OK, I'm going to warn right at the beginning that this is going to sound like a negative review, but it really was a cute romance...solid, easy, with some fun interactions and a great cast of secondary characters.  And I did give this 3 stars, so it's a solid book.  It just didn't wow me, and that's probably what's going to come across most strongly in the rest of this review.  I just wanted to caveat that so people take my thoughts with a grain of salt. So, hmmm...  Well, I was pretty excited about Spence, even if I've only seen him in brief in Willa's book.  I'm a sucker for a geek, as I married my own hot geek.  And Spence was a cutie, though I could have used a bit more awkwardness.  I will admit I read another review that talked about how he was perfectly carved, just like all the other heroes, even though we never see him exercise in this book, and I will admit that bugged me too.  Not every hero has to have the perfect body to be swoonworthy, I think I was kind of hoping he would be more normal...  Kind of a weird thing to be disappointed in, but there you go.  Maybe I just want a bit more variety in my heroes, and I was disappointed because I thought Spence would give me that.  I also really expected to learn more about his upbringing that led him to buy the Pacific Pier Building and populate it with his own little small town.  And it's not that we didn't get any of his past, it just was kind of underwhelming I guess.  He was poor.  Huh.  But he had loving parents...I expected him to be neglected or something with the way he shied away from love and built his own little family.  So that was...disappointing.  And yeah, we get bits with his Grandpa and all, and then a bit about his attempted love life, but I guess it just felt like bare bones, and not enough to really suck me in and empathize with him.  He was so mysterious in Willa's book, keeping a lot about who he was hidden (owner of the building, rich, etc).  So I was expecting a lot more.  But maybe that was me.  And I was initially excited about Eddie, but then that kind of fizzled, and we never got any closure with that.  *sigh* Then we get Colbie.  Some of her story bugged me because the author employed the "keep secrets from the reader" thing that I really dislike...in this case about what happened with Jackson.  I expected something really huge because it was kept secret for so much of the book, and then it was like oh.  That's it?  Which just flared my pet peeve again.  I guess I want a big payoff if I'm going to put up with the reader secret stuff.  I did love seeing all the little writer quirks about her, and she had such a good nature in general...she seemed really sweet and eager for affection.  But as with Spence, her background disappointed me.  Her family sounded atrocious, just a big bunch of users who didn't respect and appreciate her at all.  But then we get to the ending, and it was like an about face in a teeny amount of time, and it was NOT bel

This may have been the most emotional book of this series so far. Spence so deserved his HEA! He has been a rock for all of his friends throughout the series. Colbie was running on empty and running away from her life, when she ended up in Heartbreaker Bay, knocked into a fountain by a dog that Spence is walking. There was an immediate attraction, but a lot of hesitation on both parts, and supposedly an end date for a relationship, when Colbie would go back to her real life. I loved seeing the gradual opening up they did for each other, but there was still that learned mistrust. The Hollywood ending was perfect!

The holiday romance reading frenzy has begun! I kicked off mine with Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis. A favorite of mine, Shalvis is known for her awkward and hilarious characters. I read all her books, but the last few, to me, have been lacking some of her usual hilarity. While I wouldn't really call Chasing Christmas Eve a holiday romance - it's really a romance that just happens to take place in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The holiday itself doesn't play much of a role, more just a timing device.... the clock runs out on Christmas Eve, but hey, we will go with it anyway. Jill Shalvis is back with her trademark funny in Chasing Christmas Eve! Colbie is awkward as all hell and the Heartbreaker Bay gang is out in full force making Spence's life more interesting. Colbie is overwhelmed by her success as a writer and her responsibilities and she runs away from home to find herself in San Francisco. Specifically at the legendary fountain featured in this series. Here she runs into Spencer and Elle. Before she knows it, she's spending her vacation renting out an apartment in the building owned by Spence. And of course, falling in love. Colbie felt a little off, but she was Shalvis' trademark hot mess. And her notes while she was waitressing at Finn's were killing me! Spence has always been one of my favorite characters in this series, so I was happy to watch him fall. :-) Spencer is the enigmatic geeky millionaire. He added humor and mystery to the series. I liked that he wasn't angry about his past. He was a little defeated about it, but not mopey and angry. He was surprisingly open to falling for Colbie. My only peeve about Chasing Christmas Eve is one that's pretty common in romance novels - it is heavy on the insta-love. Within three weeks they are changing their lives (and I mean in a cross-country kind of move way) for one another. Colbie is portrayed as an overly cautious kind of person, so this is pretty out of character for her. But, like I said, this is a common pet peeve of mine when reading romance. If you are a Shalvis fan, looking for a holiday themed book, or just a fan of fun, you should definitely check out Chasing Christmas Eve.

I have been intrigued by Spencer throughout this series and was excited to finally be able to read his story! He has always been somewhat of a mystery. He is a millionaire, owns a businees and invents things, but in the previous novels we’ve only learned as much as those characters story arc’s brought us in contact him, and that was usually as supportive friend and sometimes troublemaker. In Chasing Christmas Eve we finally get the skinny on Spence, his background, how he made his money, and why he seems to be kind of a loner. Colbie Albright is new to Heartbreaker Bay and happens upon their charming courtyard fountain and is about to make a wish into it when she gets pushed into it by a wayward dog. Spencer comes to her rescue and is immediately charmed by her and feels that tug of interest. The chemistry between these two is explosive and pretty soon it makes Spencer forget his reasons for holding back from relationships. Colbie, although running away from her problems seems to find her muse, and true love in Spence. I love these Heartbreaker Bay novels. I mentioned before that as each story is written and we learn a little bit more about this group of friends, they become our friends. I’m totally invested in living through each of their stories and building that relationship with them even more.

Jill Shalvis is a go to author if you want a feel good romance. No matter how dark the circumstance or character she gives you something to laugh about. In Chasing Christmas Eve she takes two socially awkward people and throws them together in a “friends with benefits” situation with a time limit. I laughed from the first page to the last. Spence was geeky hot and Colbie was sweet as can be. I really enjoyed my visit to San Francisco and look forward to many returns.

Jill Shalvis can't help but write great novels. And this series is just one of her many rear ones. I love the story of the fountain and how it becomes a part of these books. Spence rescuing Colbie from the fountain was the perfect backdrop to their discovery of each other.

4.5 Stars I'm so in love with this series and add in a Christmas book I'm sold! I gobbled this book right up. I've been looking forward to Spence's book. It didn't disappoint. It has everything I look forward to a Jill Shalvis book added with holiday cheer. One of my favorite things about this book is the humor. I found myself laughing a lot. This book has great flow and sucks you right in.I hated to see it end. The characters were great. They added so much. I loved that we get to see previous characters from the series. That group of friends is awesome. I say this with each book, but it still stands true I want to be part of the group. I loved Colbie. Her personality was great and she's just perfect for Spence. The way Spence opens himself up with Colbie says so much about the person Colbie is because Spence is pretty private guy.

Jill Shalvis has been an auto-buy author for me for a long time. Her Heartbreaker Bay series is one of my favorite. I was excited to see that Spence was finally getting a book. Colbie, the heroine, is a new character in the series. A famous author, she escapes from New York to California for a few weeks before Christmas to take a break from her crazy life. She has spent most of her time taking care of her family, all of whom could stand on their own, and needs a break from her book series as well. California, and Spence, who she meets on the first day, is the escape she needs. Both Spence and Colbie have immense amounts of stress in their lives and it was great to see them both take a step back and have a break. What starts as a holiday friendship quickly leads to more and their relationship is both sweet and steamy. Add in the crazy couples from the previous books, and you have an enjoyable read. This book, which isn’t angsty, is the perfect holiday read to get you into the spirit of the season. While it wasn’t the best book in the series, I’m partial to the previous one, it was a heartwarming read!

Jill Shalvis has been my "definitely must read list" of authors since reading her Lucky Harbor series. I love her wit and she is able to bring out her wittiness in every single book. She never fails to hold my attention with her stories and every time I finish her book, I can't wait for her next book. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed Chasing Christmas Eve. I just love how Ms Shalvis makes her characters so real and true to themselves. Ms Shalvis shows us in her story that there is someone meant for everyone in this world and even if you were a nerd, or shy, true love could be just around the corner. Love Spencer and Colbie. They make an interesting couple and it was a joy reading of their journey together.

This is probably my twelfth or more book of Jill Shalvis that I have read and the 4th in her Heartbreaker Bay series. Just like her previous books Jill did a great job of mixing romance, drama and humor all into one book. I felt from the moment that you starting reading the first page to the very last one you are hooked. I really enjoyed the storyline in this book as well the characters that Jill created. The characters were like many people out in the real world. They wanted love but spent too much time concentrating on work. This really helps the reader connect to the book because who doesn’t root for the lonely workaholics to get together! In addition to the characters and storyline like all of the other books that Jill has written I enjoyed how she incorporated light humor into the book. She does this by giving us those witty statements/comebacks that us long time readers know and love and cant wait to read once we crack open her books and new readers which I once was laugh out loud about.  Lastly, I really enjoyed the way that she incorporated the other characters into the book. She does a great job of giving you the updates you want but not distracting you from the main characters story. I recommend this book to readers who love contemporary romance but also love a little humor in your books. Once you start reading her books you won't be able to stop. They keep getting better and better.

A chance meeting by 2 people who are really very much alike and find they totally get each other once they take the risk. The chemistry is hot between Spence and Colbie! They both hold secrets and it's fun getting to see what unfolds with these two. A Jill Shalvis book always provides laughs and this one is no different. This is the the 4th book in the series but could be read as a stand alone. I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
