This is one of those series that each book seems to be better than the last and once again Catherine Bybee has another hit on her hands, this is book 3 in the First Wives Club but each book can be read as a stand-alone although I’m sure once you pick one up you will want to read the others. We met Avery is the previous books and to be honest I wasn’t sure how her story would pan out because at the start of Chasing Shadows she wouldn’t have been a favourite character of mine but as the book progressed so did my love of her and what can I say about Liam well he has got to be one of my all time favourite hero’s, he charmed me he swooned me and I love him so big.... Avery Grant like all the other first wives is left financially secure after her divorce, she has a job she loves, no money worries, some great friends and is loving her Krav Maga Classes which she is taking because one mistake left her battered and bruised and that is something she vowed would never happen again. Avery may seem like she has it all but she is skittish and nervous especially around men she doesn’t know. Liam Holt sees Avery one night after her class when she is having a drink with a classmate, he is intrigued, the attraction is instant and he is determined to end up the man in her life. He is the perfect man for her because he can be patient , he can bide his time but most of all he can protect her and he is also willing to listen and argue the pros for every con Avery comes up with for not dating. This book has it all, I laughed, I cried and I fell for Avery and Liam. A strong and complex heroine who we see open up bit by bit with a hot swoon worthy protective hero what more can you ask for. If you love romance with the perfect mix of passion and humour this is the book for you. I highly recommend Chasing Shadows and this series. Looking forward to more from the woman of the First Wives Club.

There is something about Catherine Bybee’s style of writing that resonates with me. She weaves a story that has me invested from the very start. Although a stand alone I would probably be inclined to read the first two books before reading Chasing Shadows as their stories provide the back story for this book. Avery Grant doesn’t date as she is still mentally recovering from an attack that almost killed her. Now she concentrates on her work as an estate sales agent and learning Krav Maga. From the first moment Liam and Avery meet, the sparks fly and the air around them sizzles. Ms.Bybee creates characters that are strong, yet vulnerable and you know that there will be plenty of romance and some rather steamy scenes. Liam is determined to learn everything there is to learn about the mysterious and beautiful Avery. This includes being a sparring partner to Avery as she learns to crotchet herself. When Avery’s past comes back to haunt her and danger rears it’s ugly head, Liam will do what he has to to protect the woman he has come to care for. I fell hard and fast for Liam, he was so swoon worthy and his interactions with his adorable niece made by heart melt. It was great to see the other ladies of the first wives club and catch up on their lives as well. I love this group of strong and determined women and I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series.

Well this series seems to keep getting better. I needed to read Avery's story after reading what happened to her in Half Empty. I enjoyed the twists in this story and Liam was exactly what Avery needed. I am looking forward to next book.

Another great book in the First Wives series! With lots of emotion and strong characters, this one was hard to put down. After watching Avery try to recover from her attack in the last book, I couldn’t wait to see how her story would play out. She’s not the same person she was prior to the attack and she’s determined to never be a victim again – or at least not go down again without fighting back. Avery doesn’t do relationships. Her upbringing has her running from any type of commitment and her attack has left her feeling even more vulnerable. Liam was just what Avery needed. He pretty much works his way into her life and is willing to do whatever it takes to show her that he can be trusted and that she can trust herself. And once he teams up with Avery’s friends, there was no question that Avery would have the support system she needed to help her find her strength and slay her demons, especially as new truths are revealed. One of my favorite parts about this book is the friend group that has been created from the First Wives club. Each of these women have very different stories, but somehow, they have formed a bond that transcends any blood relationship. And as the group grows with the addition of new partners, the bond only becomes strengthened. I loved how Liam was easily accepted into the group – especially when he was basically thrown into a high-profile celebrity wedding event with no warning from Avery. And watching them all come together to help Avery in the end was just perfect. Although this was an emotional read, there really wasn’t much angst, which only made this book that much better. Catherine Bybee has such an ability to make her characters step off the page and take you with them on their journey. She’s a master at crafting a plot that pulls you in and has you looking forward to every twist and turn that the story takes and using dialogue and words to have you feeling right along with her characters. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading a Catherine Bybee book I would highly recommend you get her on - and move her to the top of - your TBR!

After a brutal attack Avery took charge and is determined to make sure she can defend herself. Now able to kick butt and take charge she is determined not to depend on anyone let alone a man. Liam may just change things for her. I loved this story and I would love to have a Liam in real life, but Liam and Avery together are enough to melt your heart. Through the many struggles that Ms Bybee throws at them in this story they find a way to be stronger together. Chasing Shadows is a good one to check out.

Catherine Bybee's Chasing Shadows is a compelling entry into the First Wives series that features a woman picking up the pieces of her life after a violent attack and the man who helps her believe in love. Avery learns to defend herself to push through the lingering effects of an attack that traumatized her. Krav Maga not only enhances her confidence, but leads her to the man who will help her overcome her hang ups about love and committed relationships. The members of First Wives club are there for Avery when she learns disturbing news about the man who attacked her. They kind of remind me of the Helping Hands from RaeAnne Thayne's Haven Point series, but much more focused on each other's love lives and providing emotional support. There is a thread of suspense that unravels in the background of the story. While Liam and Avery are starting a tentative relationship, Avery's past threatens to put and end to it before it really gets started. I enjoyed this story because it isn't a typical romance. Even the ending wasn't typical and I'm not surprised because Catherine Bybee always adds a touch of something different to her stories. I've learned to expect the unexpected from her stories and she does not disappoint in Chasing Shadows. *ARC provided in consideration for review*

Catherine Bybee is a must-read author. She writes about strong women characters that hold their own in every situation yet they know how to be women. They are willing to open their lives and their hearts to the right men and build friendships with other women that are more like sisterhoods than friendships. Chasing Shadows is the third book in the First Wives club. The women in these books are best friends. They each have their own history, their own reason for joining the First Wives Club but are in need of more, whether they know they need more or not. Avery Grant is a strong, wealthy woman. She doesn’t need any man nor does she want any man. Until she runs into Liam and can’t get him off her mind, he shows up at the club where she is learning to defend herself, she finds him intriguing, and takes a risk at getting to know him better. There were times that I thought Liam was stalkerish but I soon learned that he just felt the same attraction that Avery felt. He couldn’t forget her but knew he couldn’t push her. He wanted her, he needed her, and he had to find a way to win her over to make her his and him hers. I love how respectful he is of her past. He knows there is something there her back but he doesn’t push, he gives her the space she needs, he crowds her when she doesn’t even know she needs to be crowded, and he offers her his heart without expecting anything in return. Chasing Shadows is another amazing winner by Catherine Bybee. I am entirely hooked on the First Wives club series.

I didn't think this series could get any better after the last one but I was wrong, this one tops the last. Avery is definitely a warrior, not just a survivor! Oh, and Liam. When we get the first glimpse of him in Pugs Bar, I thought he was going to be a problem but oh, he is so much more, he is her redemption, just what she needed at this point in her life. The First Wives come together for Trina's wedding and, much to Avery's chagrin, Liam is invited into the fold and exposed to group and what it will take to be in Avery's life. Chasing Shadows is perfectly told so we are brought along with Avery as she recovers from the devastating attack and now nearly a year later what after learning to fight and survive and now her memories are coming back and with this she takes her fate into her hands and disappears to New York City to find her attacker herself. Will Liam let her go or will he rally the troops when he finally discovers she has disappeared? Oh, this was so good and I couldn't put it down. This one could be read as a standalone, as all in this series, but why would you want to do that! I definitely recommend this one! **Received this ARC for review from the publisher via NetGalley**

The First Wives series by Catherine Bybee just keeps getting better as the stories progress. I did NOT think she could top Trina and Wade's story, but..oh...my...word...I adored Avery and Liam. When Liam first spies Avery in the dive bar near her gym, he is completely enthralled. And realizes from the get go that he is going to have to approach with caution. And while Avery is very upfront about her disinterest in dating - she finds herself spending more time with Liam as the days and weeks go by. And man, the reader can do nothing but root for these two. After the events of a year prior, Avery is deep in survival mode, and her friends only know half of whats going through her mind. And Liam may be the only one that can pull her back from the brink. Liam is the classic hero - hot, yet kind, caring, compassionate - dotes on his sister and niece. And OH. MY. can he and Avery set those pages aflame. If you haven't been reading the First Wives series, I urge you to catch up today, because these men are hawt, and the women are pretty badass themselves!

Book three in the First Wives Club is a solid showing in this series. Life is grand. You are doing everything you've ever wanted. You're making a difference and loving what you do. Then, you're savagely beaten. How do you come back from that? A year after her hospitalization, Avery is trying. Trying to get back to the 'old' Avery. Trying to feel safe again. She's determined, and is learning martial arts, specifically Krav Maga, to get her life back. She's not interested in finding a man, but sometimes things happen. Liam is interested in Avery. Avery could care less. He has to 'meet' her, so is kind of stalkerish and finds the gym she attends. He's a Mr. Fixit and figures a gym needs something fixed, right? This story shows Avery's vulnerability, Liam's 'stick to it' attitude, and ultimately how much better they can be together. I LOVED Liam's sister and niece. You can tell he's a good guy by how he treats his family. We also get caught up with the rest of the 'First Wives' and I can't wait for Shannon's story. One caveat, you should probably read books 1 and 2 in the series for a better understanding of the whole 'First Wives' story line. It won't be a hardship...they're all fabulous!

Each story gets better! I've really enjoyed this series. The friendship between the ladies that are part of the First Wives Club is fabulous! We all could use friends like these. Avery is a changed person. She is no longer the good time girl she was in the previous stories. The attack she experienced has truly changed her. She is reinventing herself from being the victim to being a warrior. Liam is so not who I would have expected her to be paired with. But they worked perfectly. Liam is a guy we all wish we had in our lives. He let her be herself, but was there when she needed someone. I enjoy every minute of Catherine Bybee books. They pull me into the story and won't let me go until I get to the last page. I'm looking forward to the next and am hoping there are more to follow! I received an advance copy for an honest review.

From Victim to Survivor, to Warrior – A MUST READ! “Chasing Shadows” is about facing challenges and change. All her life, Avery fought against becoming her mother. A woman – prim, proper, and pampered. Mother’s mission in life was to see her daughter married off to a wealthy suitor. However, Avery had plans of her won. First order of business was getting away from mother. Second, was securing her own income. Yet, as fate would have it, she would marry for money. But, on her own terms. Avery became a client of “Alliance,” a matchmaking organization. “Alliance” arranged marriages for men of means who needed brides for numerous reasons. “Alliance” would draw up contracts (excluding any sexual contact) for a couple, agreeing to marry and divorce within a specific time. Upon the fulfillment of the contract, the ex-wife is awarded a substantial financial settlement for services rendered. After her marriage and divorce, Avery joined the “First Wives” club and became very good friends with three other divorcés: Lori, Katrina, and Shannon. Over time, the women developed a strong bond between them and became best friends. In book-two, Avery was attacked and was badly injured. In book three, we see Avery trying to restore her life. Due to her injuries, she doesn’t remember much about the attack or her attacker; but bits and pieces start to resurface, leaving her confused and anxious. Meanwhile, Avery’s goal is to no longer be the victim, or merely a survivor. She wants her old life back! Of course, there’s always the unexpected. Liam saw her, “…the one woman in the place who didn’t belong.” He was drawn to her, and blondes weren’t usually his type. But there was something about her. Avery didn’t notice him until she was leaving the bar. “He wasn’t her type. Too big. Too hard.” But, there was something about him that made her feel a heat she hadn’t felt in almost a year. The two main characters are as different as night and day. Liam, a gentleman through and through. Raised by a mother who taught him how to treat women. Avery, hardened by barriers she erected to keep her mother out of her life. Avery doesn’t do relationships. She’s more of a love’em and leave’em kind of girl. Liam, on the other hand, wants more. He wants this woman. He wants to be her “plus-one.” Avery’s not sure she wants a “plus-one.” Additionally, she pulls away from friends and family, because of the shadows invading her mind. Determined to face her own demons, she shuts everyone out. Including Liam. Everyone is confused and upset. They want to be a part of Avery’s life again. Will they? And what about Liam? Will he wait for her? “Chasing Shadows” is a must read! The chase will have you on the edge of your seat! I love Bybee's stories. And, I loved this book. However, I gave 4-stars because Liam's description was only have done. The whole time I was reading this book, I wanted to know the color of his hair. Was it long or short? What color were his eyes? Picky, I know. But, it didn't complete him for me. I was given an ARC to render a fair and unbias review.

If you follow my review, you probably know that Catherine Bybee is one of my all time favorite authors and I read her books religiously. So when I found out that there would be a spin off of my favorite series, Weekday Brides, I was super excited. And I wasn't disappointed. The first two books in the series more than passed the high standards I have for Catherine Bybee's books but this third book in the series is on a completely different level. It was emotional, a little bit heartbreaking, definitely romantic and super sexy. But in a way, it also felt cathartic. Though there wasn't that much suspense in the story, the plot line was still fast paced and intriguing. I literally couldn't put the book down. Both Avery and Liam are intriguing characters. Even though I wasn't a total Avery fan from the previous books in the series, she totally won me over. Living through the emotional and physical repercussions of her attack, definitely changed her but they also affected her ability to trust and depend on people. And though she would do anything for her friends, her past and recent trauma, made her even more closed off. But with his persistence and tender heart Liam manages to weave his way behind Avery's walls and when she needs him to stand beside her when she confronts her emotional scars from the attack, he is right beside her and gives her the strength she needs to forget, to move on, to forgive. For me, this is the best book in this spin-off series so far. It is just so emotional that there is no chance it won't touch your heart. Avery and Liam are just perfect for each other their story definitely deserves to be read. So don't waste any time and pick up your copy asap. As this is a standalone, you don't need to read the previous books in the series, but if you decide to do it, that will just enhance your experience. I can guarantee you won't regret it. As for me, I can't wait to get my hands on Shannon's story :) I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

With each book from this series I think it’s the best one yet…so yeah, this is the best one yet. I never expected to love them as much as I do but dang, they just keep getting better and better until I can’t get enough of them. We learned about Avery in the previous books and I was really curious to find out what her full story was going to look like. While you don’t necessarily have to read them, there is some background information to help you understand more fully what she has been through. She has definitely developed into one tough heroine and I loved how this author had her “chasing shadows” and the ultimate outcome of the chase. Color me surprised…and pleased. I am a huge fan of Liam. He was just so perfect. He instinctively knew what would cause Avery to run and he avoided those things at all cost even as he slowly courted her and pulled her into his life. There was the potential for a lot of push and pull but that’s not what we got and again I was a happy reader. I loved watching Liam and Avery together as they practiced krav maga together. The fact that even then Liam didn’t want to hurt her, while knowing practicing these skills was for her benefit, made me love him. I adored each time I got his point of view and he absolutely made my heart swoon. I rarely swoon. I don’t think this is a fast paced story but I really don’t know. Once I started I couldn’t stop. I found myself devouring every word and then suddenly it was the end and I just wanted more. Also, I was so wrapped up in the relationship Liam was building with Avery that the steam factor didn’t really stick out to me. But I assure you, it was there. All the women from the first wives club is present as well as some new characters that helped to add depth to this hero and heroine as they interacted with each other. There was one little villainy type situation that had me scratching my head because it didn’t go anywhere. Either I completely misread it, the character may come up in a later book, or it is simply a loose end. Overall, this is a wonderful book with some great romancing-the-heroine romance as well as a bit of mystery. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley and Montlake Romance. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Avery was used to being the life of the party. But that all changed in the blink of an eye. She has become closed off, more careful and reserved. After all she went thru who can blame her. But keeping secrets from her besties isn't something she's used to doing. She doesn't want them to worry. She's a warrior not just a survivor. She can take care of herself. Why shouldn't she learn to protect herself after almost being beaten to death?? Liam couldn't take his eyes off of her. Of all the women in the bar she was the one that caught his eye. And after she handled that jerk of a guy he respects her too. So he makes it impossible not to see her. Volunteering to do some work for her trainer, he doesn't know what to do when he gets thrown into being her mat partner. But he can't resist being close to Avery. That look in her eyes, the panic and fear if only for a split second he wants to erase. Instant electricity flows through Avery and Liam only making it a matter if time before they become more. But Avery wants fast and he is determined to make her see him as more than she wants. More than she knows. And learning all her secrets makes him love her even more. Can he erase the shadows behind her eyes and bring out her light? Show her love isn't scary and make her his forever?

Another incredible story in Catherine Bybee's First Wives series! I'm a huge fan of Ms. Bybee and this book is a perfect example of why. Her characters are flawed, believable, and feel like our friends. She crafts stories that pull you in right from the start and hold you captivated. This book is all that and more. Liam and Avery have chemistry that sizzles the pages but Avery's past has her fighting the attraction. Liam won't give up on her though. He knows Avery is worth the fight. Their story is one you don't want to miss. Put it on the must read list. I highly recommend it.

Please bare with me because I really just want to swoon all over Liam. If I could dedicate this whole review to him, he is worthy BUT I won't cause I gotta say that Avery really surprised me. I should talk about her first cause she has been there from book 1 in the series and Liam is new. Besides, I like to save the best for last anyway. Ok, so Avery was a character in the first two books that I just wasn't too sure about. She came of a bit shallow, maybe a bit spoiled and a tad bit immature in the first two books. You do also get to see a very protectives side to her when it came to her girls so she did have redeeming qualities. I just wasn't sure how much I was going to like her as a main character. I really love when an author proves me wrong. Granted Avery experienced a trauma in book 2 which explains some of the shift in her character but she wasn't so different that you didn't recognize her. I liked her a lot. You learn a lot about her background and why she was flighty in the first place. It also explained why she had a hard time letting Liam in. Now for my favorite part....Liam. Liam is going in to my top favorite heroes. I loved him from the moment he was introduced all the way to the end. I fell farther and farther for him every step of the way. What I loved about him the most is that he took one look at Avery and knew he needed to know her and he wasn't going to stop until he did. One of the best features in a man is knowing what he wants and going after it. Liam learns right away that Avery is skittish and the way he handled her was perfection. I think I am actually going to be vague about his pursuit. It's something to experience for yourself. I was completely charmed and want to find more heroes just like him. This is one of those books where I could easily start back at the beginning and immediately re-read it. It's safe to say that I recommend it.
