4.5/5 Stars Vi's long awaited reunion has finally arrived but now the imperial family is mourning an apparent loss and her visions are sending her to the Crescent Continent. She's focused on her mission but also dealing with her new standing in the Solaris Empire. Vi is also learning what it's like to have her brother around and navigating familial relations up close. Honestly I could have used more Romulin and Andru but they were so sweet together and I'll just have to hope for future moments with them. Jayme's development was much needed with some predictability and one big surprise and I was happy to see Jax, Vhalla, and even Erion make appearances. Taaven continues to grow on me and his relationship with Vi is thrilling as well as complicated. Overall Elise Kova continues to impress with her Air Awakens world and Chosen Champion delivered a character driven narrative that left my heart pounding. Filled with emotion and discovery, Vi's journey from the North reflected a lot of inner turmoil as well as outside forces bearing down on her and the author provided plenty of ups and downs to keep me enthralled. Obviously I recommend picking this one up and if you haven't started the Vortex Chronicles now is the time.
I love everything about this story. The characters are realistic and I can't help but get attached. The world is accurate for what I saw in the previous series, yet so much bigger. This book put me through a wealth of emotional paces. Vi went through some pretty big highs, and especially lows in this story. Even though I sort of saw it coming, I'm still recovering from the worst part. I only wish the next book would come a lot sooner.
I was so tense the entire time I was reading this . . . it was just so incredibly intense, both the story and the emotions, and there was no way I could have predicted that ending. No way. My ship is still sailing (and then some!) which makes me really happy, but wow, what a cliffhanger after a whole lot of crazy at the end! I knew I'd need book three right away, but literally, I need it this very moment. I don't think I'm going to get any sleep worrying about this girl and the predicament (to put it mildly) she's in.
