Deitche has documented the seedy past of Tampa in an interesting and informative book. His impeccable research provides insight into the gangsters and killers that ruled the rackets in Tampa during the Prohibition era up to the modern era. He chronicles the inner workings of of the Mafia and it's constant battle to hold onto the gambling, extortion and drugs trade in Tampa. As a career Law Enforcement Officer in Tampa and Hillsborough County for 32 years, I saw first hand some of the involvement of organized crime in Tampa. As a young Vice cop in the early 70's Bolita was still rampant in Ybor City and a challenge for a "gringo cop" to infiltrate. The Bolita peddlers, bankers and runners were difficult to catch in the act and even harder to mount a long term investigation into. Many of those people are described in this book and, quite frankly, brought back bitter sweet memories to this reader. This is an interesting read for any one with an attachment to Tampa. You will recognize many names from Tampa's past (not necessarily in a good light). Loved it and highly recommend it.
