Cinderellas of West 53rd Street: Stories from the Legendary Rehearsal Club

In keeping with The Rehearsal Club mission to “preserve its legacy,” a national network of former residents came together to tell their stories while living at The Rehearsal Club. Spanning four decades, 1940s - 1970s, The Rehearsal Club “Cinderellas” (coined by TV Guide in the 1950s) captures New York City and Broadway history while charting the journey leading to The Rehearsal Club's incorporation in 2019.

Carol Burnett, Blythe Danner and others are recognizable, well-known RC Alums. Each talented Cinderella memoir shares their adventurous, determined, generous spirits. Similarly to those anonymous, back-up dancers who tipped their top hats during “Singular Sensation” (the finale to A Chorus Line), by the time the last page turns, you will know these women. Maybe recognize yourself? What we all do for love.

Editorial Reviews

Broadway musical star John Rubinstein

This book tells many delightful, fascinating, mostly unknown stories, by and about the women whose lives and careers were given an undeniable and important boost by living in that uplifting and supportive environment. Some are hilarious, some heart-breaking, all are charmingly remembered and written, and together provide a wonderful insight into a bygone world of inspired and hopeful artists at the outset of their lifelong professional journeys. A page-turner of the first order!”

JULY 2024 - AudioFile

After a foreword by Blythe Danner, each mini-essay in this historical treasure is announced with its title, author, and narrator. All the works are written and read by former Rehearsal Club (TRC) professionals. In a kinder, more caring world there once was a place where young would-be actresses from out of town could find a safe, inexpensive place to live in New York City while seeking stage work. The Rehearsal Club--two brownstones joined together--provided such a refuge for actresses who included Carol Burnett, Teri Garr, Sandy Duncan, and others. This audiobook is a collection of first-person remembrances of TRC members from the 1940s to the 1970s. All the stories are fascinating, although some are delivered with more assurance than others. A 42-page pdf of dedicated TRC professionals follows. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
