CHAPTER 1

SKILL LEVEL ** EASY


FINISHED SIZES

Basket #1: 4 x 4 x 4½ inches

Basket #2: 6 x 6 x 6 inches

Basket #3: 9 x 12 x 3 inches


MATERIALS

• TLC Cotton Plus medium (worsted) weight yarn (3½ oz/178 yds/100g per skein):

4 skeins #3533 periwinkle

3 skeins each #3252 tangerine and #3303 tan

• Size H/8/5mm and K/10½/6.5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle

• Stitch markers


GAUGE

Size K hook and 3 strands held tog: 8 sc = 3 inches; 9 rows = 3 inches


PATTERN NOTES

Weave in ends as work progresses.

Two methods for beginning these baskets are given — the first method uses the traditional chain and first row of single crochet. The second method uses a foundation single crochet, which creates the chain and first row at the same time. Use either method.

Use 3 strands of yarn held together throughout and K hook, unless otherwise directed.

Sides of the baskets are worked from the bottom to the top.


SPECIAL STITCH

Foundation single crochet (foundation sc): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 1 lp on hook (1 ch), yo, draw through 2 lps on hook (foundation sc), insert hook under 2 lps of ch made in first foundation sc, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 1 lp (1 ch), yo, draw through 2 lps. (2 foundation sc)

Continue in this manner for number of foundation sc needed.

Bottom

Method 1

Row 1 (RS): With K hook and 3 strands of tan held tog, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (8 sc)


Method 2

Row 1 (RS): With K hook and 3 strands of tan, work 8foundation sc(see Special Stitch), turn. (8 foundation sc)


Both Methods

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Rows 3–9: Rep row 2. At end of row 9, do not turn.


Edging

Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as last sc on row 9, place marker in first of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 9, sc in each of next 7 rows, working along next side, 2 sc in bottom of first sc of row 1, place marker in first of these 2 sc, sc in bottom of each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in bottom of last sc, place marker in last of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 1, sc in next 8 rows, join in first sc of row 9, place marker in joining sl st, fasten off. (35 sc, 1 sl st)


Side

Make 4.

Method 1

Edging

Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as last sc on row 11, place marker in first of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 11, sc in each of next 9 rows, working along next side, 2 sc in bottom of first sc of row 1, place marker in first of these 2 sc, sc in bottom of each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in bottom of last sc, place marker in last of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 1, sc in each of next 10 rows, join in first sc of row 11, place marker in joining sl st, fasten off. (39 sc, 1 sl st)


ASSEMBLY

With RS facing, pin Sides tog at marked sts. With H hook and 1 strand tan, starting at bottom of any 2 Sides, sc in back lps(see StitchGuide.com) only of corresponding sts across Sides. Fasten off. Rep on rem Sides.

Pin Bottom to bottom edges of Sides. With H hook and 1 strand of tan, working through both thicknesses of Sides and bottom and in back lps only, sc evenly spaced around, working 1 sc connecting corner of Bottom to 1 adjacent Side, then working another sc in same corner of Bottom and corner of next adjacent Side, join in first sc. Fasten off.


TOP EDGING

With K hook and 3 strands of tan, sc in each sc around top edge of Basket, join in first sc, fasten off.


BASKET #2

Bottom/Sides

Make 5.


Method 1

Row 1 (RS): With K hook and 3 strands of tangerine, ch 17, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (16 sc)


Method 2

Row 1 (RS): With K hook and 3 strands of tangerine, work 16foundation sc(see Special Stitch), turn. (16 foundation sc)


Both Methods

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Rows 3–17: Rep row 2. At end of row 17, do not turn.


Edging

Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as last sc on row 17, place marker in first of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 17, sc in each of next 15 rows, working along next side, 2 sc in bottom of first sc of row 1, place marker in first of these 2 sc, sc in bottom of each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in bottom of last sc, place marker in last of these 2 sc, working along next side in ends of rows, sk row 1, sc in each of next 16 rows, join in first sc of row 17, place marker in joining sl st, fasten off. (67 sc, 1 sl st)


ASSEMBLY

With tangerine, work same as Assembly for Basket #1.


TOP EDGING

With tangerine, work same as Top Edging of Basket #1.

Row 1 (RS): With K hook and 3 strands of periwinkle, ch 33, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (32 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
