Though not an exact comparison, Guy De Maupassant was to French literature what Edgar Alan Poe was to American: both were master storytellers in their time. They wrote stories which have been read all over the world for their rich story development, in addition to giving the reader a glimpse into what life was like during the late 19th Century. Anybody who enjoys the art form of the story would enjoy this book. A cover to cover reading in just a few sittings would probably not be as enjoyable as reading the stories during times in life when a story might be just the complement to a free space in a busy day (i.e. while riding the train or bus, waiting to see one's doctor or dentist).
