Overview

Complicated by Kristen Ashley

When small town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.
Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids, and himself, is his only priority.
Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them-a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.
Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.
But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.
In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

About the Author

Kristen Ashley is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She grew up in Indiana, but has lived in Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she's been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least), but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, living in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Kristen Ashley NEVER disappoints. She creates characters that bowl you over with their deep realness. There is never a moment that you're reading one of her books where you think, "sure, that's gonna happen." The truth and honesty resonates from the first sentence to the last and holds you as a happy captive the entire time. If you're wondering if you should read this book, wonder no longer. Buy it. Devour it. You'll LOVE it.

I really enjoyed Complicated. I kept checking the page count to make sure I had plenty of reading time. Her inclusion of kids in the story brings real life issues forward. Life is more than getting a glass of wine to watch the sunset. Her characters are flawed, strong, varied, and wonderful. Kristen does not rush the drama nor shy away from rounding out each storyline to completion. Enjoyed.

I love this wonderful story. Kristen Ashley is definitely one of my favorite authors. This sometimes "Complicated", awesome story of Greta and Hixon is another book that I could not stop reading. Thank you, Kristen Ashley. I recommend this book, and ALL her books, starting off with her Rock Chick series! pf

I saw the cover for this book and that got my interest. I then read the summary and I was really interested. So, I read it and boy am I glad that I did – WOW! Small town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake has just gone through a confusing divorce from his wife of 18+ years. He did not want the divorce, but she did and so it happened. He is a strong man dedicated to his job, his three wonderful children and his town. Into this mix is added Greta Dare, beautician and singer at one of the town clubs. She has had a rough life, taking care of herself since she was small as well as her younger brother who was injured both mentally and physically in a car accident. Hixon and Greta become involved, but it is not smooth sailing, it is COMPLICATED (great title)! I loved everything about the book, the main characters, the story, the town, the secondary characters (well, maybe not Greta’s mother). This is not a “sweet” romance, but gritty with human emotions and sexual activity between Hixon and Greta. I can’t wait to try other books written by Ms. Ashley. I was not given a free copy nor was I asked to review this book. (by paytonpuppy)

There is just something magical about the way that she writes. This book is no different. I love that it’s not just a very young couple falling in love and doing all the normal stuff or what we think is normal. But a more mature couple with an amazing story.

Hixon Drake has just gone through a divorce when he meets Greta Dare. Caught up in a fiery moment, he has to be “that” guy and walks away before he can get drawn in any further. He needs to concentrate on his kids and create a stable home for them when he has custody. An admirable reason, definitely. However, as the sheriff of this small town, his actions are noticed by everybody and that one night stand is not as secret as he’d like it to be. When his ex decides to try to mess with Greta’s livelihood, Dixon gets involved and the statement he makes to help resolve the issue cements their relationship status in the eyes of the community even if the status between the two of them is a little more muddy. There are many ups and downs to the beginning of their relationship, but when Dixon makes a decision he is decided in his actions. Greta is used to being treated poorly by men. Growing up in a trailer park, with an alcoholic troublemaker for a mother has created a difficult climb out of that life. She is also the guardian of her brother who has special needs, and doesn’t have time for a sheriff who treats her poorly also. I really liked Greta’s personality! She was a giver to the 100th degree and yet didn’t let herself get walked on by others. When Dixon finally see’s the light, theirs is a love story that is solid and real. Actually, the most real of any that I’ve read by this author. Did I like the way the book started? No, but it definitely created an immediate hurtle that Dixon needed to resolve before he could get to the point where he’d fight for the relationship. When he got there, he was all in and I loved that. Just with all of Kristen Ashley’s books, the chemistry between the two main characters was sizzling, but what I always like are their relationships to the people that surround them. The relationship between Hixon and his kids, between Greta and her co-workers, and then Greta and her brother was the mashed potatoes to the meat loaf of their love story. OK, not a very romantic analogy, but you can’t have a good meat loaf with out that mound of mashed potatoes! The same goes for characters in a story. Theirs was the heart, but you need the comparison of their friendships to realize these two people were perfect for each other. Complicated, was full of complications but these characters and the story were wonderful.

I love Kristen Ashley but can't read more than 2 books in a row....because of the quirky sentence structure and syntax. I find myself getting lost and having to re-read whole passages. But in Complicted the run on sentences seem to be less and the syntax more "normal". This book reminded me of the Sweet Dreams series.....a solid hero and a feisty heroine. I loved how it was as much a story about Hix being blindsided with his divorce as Greta and her story of survival. Ms Ashley always has well developed side characters and this book is no exception. My only complaint is the reason behind the divorce is unbelievable....esp Hope's regret after the fact. All in all, this is classic Kristen Ashley and has everything I love when I pick up one of her books!
