Theophrastus was a prolific Greek scholar whose interests ranged from biology to metaphysics. He succeeded Aristotle in the Peripatetic school and was the predecessor to Strato. Theophrastus surviving works in botany are Enquiry into Plants and On the Causes of Plants , which were both used by practitioners throughout the middle ages.
