Intense! That’s how I found this story right from the start. Cole’s deep personal issues are evident right away but told in such a way that the reader empathizes with him, hoping for someone to show him that things don’t have to be the way they are. And that person is definitely Serena. I loved the way they met, and how Serena was able to see past Cole’s outward surly attitude to the hurting man underneath. Cole’s anger issues are evident, but they don’t deter her from sticking to her agreement to help him with whatever he needs to get through the physical difficulties of his leg injury until he heals. And while she’s at it, she may not acknowledge it right away, but she wants to help him heal emotionally as well. It’s an added responsibility for her, as she works full time as a teacher and helps her mother care for her nephew Max (whose mother, her sister, is an absentee parent with addiction issues). But she can’t resist the handsome, tortured man who is so obviously lonely. As they get to know each other and Cole opens up to Serena, they can’t resist the sexual attraction between them, which leads to several steamy and emotional scenes. Cole is clear with Serena that he can’t offer her anything more than the here and now, that he has nothing to give to a committed relationship. Whatever this thing is, he clearly expects that once his leg is healed, they will go their separate ways, back to being neighbourly acquaintances. But of course it’s never so simple, and his feelings for Serena become so much more, though he is afraid of what loving her will mean, afraid of hurting her if he doesn’t back off before it’s too late. From one page to the next the story unfolds in dramatic fashion, with a sexy romance interspersed with the reality of how ones’s childhood and adolescence affect one later in life. It’s fair to say there were a few tears shed, and a sigh of relief and a smile at the happy ending that Cole and Serena finally achieve. 4 stars.

Emotional ride with anger, guilt, sorrow, pain . . . I do not like to give away the story or much of the insides, but the man with the sexy English accent and the anger, guilt, sorrow, pain within will pull you in to his life and turn you on all at the same time. My first read from Jeanette Grey will not be my last. I was desperate to reach the next page. Then to reach the next chapter. When I found that I had reached the end I was wanting more. **This ARC was provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.** More @
