What the Civil Rights Act of 1964 promised did not assist with the day-to-day struggles Mom faced. Hampered by unsuccessful marriages and relationships, and now nearing the age of forty and pregnant with her sixth child, Mom had to make a change. During that pregnancy Steve beat Mom once again, but his physical beating could not overcome the beating of Tonia's heart inside her body.
