Description: This exam preparation book has five separate tests, each with 90 questions, in the format of multiple true-false — one stem and five possible true-false statements.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare critical care trainees to pass the U.K. and European intensive care medicine examinations. With a total of 450 questions (2,250 separate true-false statements), the book gives readers plenty of practice.
Audience: The intended audience includes intensive care medicine trainees in the U.K., Ireland, Europe, India, Australia, and New Zealand. No doubt this will be a useful refresher and challenge for critical care practitioners who have already achieved certification. The authors all have backgrounds in anesthesia and intensive care medicine, but they state they also had input from other those with other backgrounds, such as surgery and cardiology.
Features: The multiple true-false format makes for a much more challenging test than regular multiple-choice questions where the learner only has to choose the one best answer. All areas of critical care are covered, including surgical, neuro, cardiac, toxicology, just to name a few. The book also covers procedures, echocardiography physics, and even SI units in medicine. There are also some pediatric questions. The index lists all questions for that particular topic.
Assessment: This book will be great practice for those preparing for the intensive care medicine examinations. It will be less useful for trainees in the U.S. due to small variations in terminology, units, references, and medication names. However, trainees in U.S. programs will find the book challenging and it will broaden their perspective on critical care in the rest of the world.
