CHAPTER 1

Crochet Scrap Jacket & Hat

Chest: 27 inches (small) [29 inches (medium), 31 inches (large)]


Materials

• Medium (worsted) weight yarn:

20 [22, 24] oz/1,000 [1,100, 1,200] yds/567 [624, 680]g various colors

• Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle


Gauge

7 sts = 2 inches

Take time to check gauge.


Pattern Notes

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-2 at beginning of row counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.


Jacket


Lower Body

Note: Lower Body is worked from side to side. Change color at end of every 2nd row.

Row 1 (RS): With color of choice, ch 31 [37, 41], hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg 2 sk chs count as a hdc), hdc in each of next 14 [17, 19] chs, dc in each of next 15 [18, 20] chs, turn. (30 [36, 40] sts)

Row 2: Ch 8, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in each of rem chs (curlicue made), dc in each of next 15 [18, 20] sts, hdc in each of next 15 [18, 20] sts, change color(see Stitch Guide at StitchGuide.com), turn.

Row 3: Ch 2(see Pattern Notes), hdc in each of next 14 [17, 29] sts, dc in each of next 15 [18, 20] sts, turn.

Row 4: Ch 8, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in each of rem chs (curlicue made), dc in each of next 15 [18, 20] sts, hdc in each of next 15 [18, 20] sts, change color, turn.

Rows 5–80 [5–88, 5–92]: Rep rows 3 and 4 alternately. At end of last row, do not change color. Fasten off.

Row 81 [89, 93]: Hold piece with RS facing and curlicues to bottom, working across end of rows at top of piece, join(see Pattern Notes) color of choice in first st, ch 2, work 79 [87, 95] hdc evenly sp across side, turn. (80 [88, 96] hdc)

Row 82 [90, 94]: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across. Change to new color.


Right Front Yoke

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc dec(see Stitch Guide at StitchGuide.com) in first 2 sts, hdc in each of next 18 [20, 21] sts, leaving rem sts unworked, turn. (19 [21, 22] hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rows 3–14: [Rep rows 1 and 2 alternately] 6 times. (13 [15, 16] hdc at end of last row)

Row 15: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rep row 15 until Yoke measures 5½ [6, 6½] inches. Fasten off.


Left Front Yoke

Row 1 (RS): Hold piece with RS facing, sk next 40 [44, 46] sts on last row of Lower Body from Right Front Yoke, join color of choice in next st, ch 2, hdc in each of next 17 [19, 20] sts, hdc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (19 [21, 22] hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rows 3–14: [Rep rows 1 and 2 alternately] 6 times. (13 [15, 16] hdc at end of last row)

Row 15: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rep row 15 until Yoke measures 5½ [6, 6½] inches. Fasten off.


Back

Row 1: Hold piece with RS facing, join color of choice in first sk st on last row of Lower Body from Right Front Yoke, ch 2, hdc in each of next 39 [43, 45] sts, turn. (40 [44, 46] hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rep row 2 until piece measures same as fronts. At end of last row, fasten off.


Sleeve

Make 2.

Note: Use different color for each Sleeve.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 23 [27, 29], hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg 2 sk chs count as a hdc), hdc in each rem ch across, turn. (22 [26, 28] hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in first hdc, hdc in each hdc across to last hdc, 2 hdc in last hdc, turn. (24 [26, 30] hdc)

Rows 4–19 [4–19, 4–21]: [Rep rows 2 and 3 alternately] 7 [7, 8] times. (38 [40, 46] hdc at end of last row)

Row 20 [20, 22]: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Rep row 20 [20, 22] until piece measures 8½ [10½, 11½] inches. Fasten off.


Assembly

Sew shoulder seams. Sew Sleeve seams.

Sew in Sleeves, matching center of Sleeve to shoulder seam.


Sleeve Edging

Note: [Use same color for edging as used for last 2 rows of Lower Body.

Hold 1 Sleeve with RS facing, join yarn with sc in seam, sc in each st around, join in beg sc. Fasten off. Rep on rem Sleeve.


Front Edging & Ties

Note: Use same color for Edging as used for last 2 rows of Lower Body.

Hold piece with RS facing, join yarn in end of row 81 [89, 93] of Lower Body, ch 38, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in each of next 6 chs, sl st in each rem ch, working up Yoke section, work 16 [17, 18] sc evenly sp to shoulder seam, work 14 sc evenly sp across back, working down Yoke section, work 16 [17, 18] sc evenly sp to row 81 [89, 93] of Lower Body, ch 38, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in each of next 6 chs, sl st in each rem ch. Fasten off.


Hat

Note: Work 2 rows each color, following same color sequence as used for Lower Body.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 60, join(see Pattern Notes) to form a ring, being careful not to twist ch, ch 2(see Pattern Notes), hdc in each rem ch around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2. (60 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.

Rnds 3–12: Rep rnd 2. At end of last row, fasten off.
