Summarizes the information gathered so far that neutrophils do indeed have the capacity for RNA/protein synthesis, and that they synthesize not only numerous proteins involved in their effector functions, but also produce a variety of cytokines that, among other functions, coordinate the network of cellular interactions regulating natural and immune resistance. Neutrophils, also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), are the first line of defense against invading microbes, and had been thought to lack the capacity for synthesis because of their short life span. The evidence suggests that neutrophils play an important role in eliciting and sustaining inflammation and may also contribute to the regulation of immune reactions. Annotation c.
