This one started out good and the author has an interesting writing style, but it was too easy to figure out where the story was going. About halfway through, I started having a hard time focusing on the story as it started to drag out a bit. There were some interesting characters, but it became confusing once more and more characters were introduced, each with their own story. It just became too much to keep up with, especially when reading about Clare's past. That much detail of the past can be tricky when trying to maintain a reader's interest and it just didn't work well for me. I did push through to the end but felt like it took much too long to get there.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. This book immediately hooked me from the beginning. I loved the characters and I loved the storyline. But then I got more into the book and I honestly got kind of bored. I was having a hard time bouncing back and forth between the daughter and the mother's point of view. The writing style was great but I didn't care for the run on in certain points. The book is about Samantha who goes on a trip with her best friend Ginny to San Francisco despite her mother not wanting her to go. When they land and Ginny goes to the bathroom to freshen up, she never comes back out. Samantha and a guy she met on the plane, Levi, must find what happened to her and secrets from the past erupt. Turns out Samantha's mom has not always been honest with her daughter and Samantha is in for the shock of her life. The ending was great and that's the only reason I made it through the middle of the book was curiosity. I am excited to read the next book in the series, hopefully the entire book is great.

I enjoyed reading this book. Was it perfect? Of course not. Was it great? Maybe not. Did I find parts of the book unbelievable or annoying? Yes. But, was it entertaining? YES!! I liked the way that the author intertwined the present day with Samantha and Levi with the past of Clare and Clive. The story kept me reading long after I needed to be doing something else. Clare is obviously a very confused person (understandably), but I also found myself feeling sympathy for her. Samantha is just a normal young woman, getting ready to start college in a few weeks. She and her friend, Ginny, take a trip to San Francisco before college starts and Sam's life is quickly blown apart. The book moved at a fast pace and the writing drew me in to the lives of these flawed characters. I liked the way that the author tied all of these seemingly unconnected people into a well-crafted whole. This is just the type of book to read when you are lying on the beach, just trying to get away from the real world. I was gifted a copy of the book and chose to review it.

Samantha “Sam” Bronwyn has just graduated high school and is on a flight to California with her best friend Ginny. Ginny, in Sam’s coat, goes to the bathroom when they arrive in San Francisco and then disappears. Quickly Sam realizes that it was supposed to be her that disappeared and she goes on the run for her life. But who is after her and why? Sam’s mother Clare, has a serious secret, when she was a young psychiatrist in a prison that fell for the wrong man. She started her life fresh but has worried that her past is going to catch up to her and this is the start of this nightmare. But Clare doesn’t know who she can trust and if she is even going to make it out of this one alive. This was a great story that started out with a bang and just kept going. You bounce between Sam and Clare’s points of view but you also learn about Clare’s past and how this is affecting the present situations. And just when you think you have everything figured out, the last reveal will leave you reeling. This is a great thriller. I loved where the story went and can’t wait for the next book in this series. I received Daddy Darkest from Ari at Candid Book Reviews for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

I was given an Advanced Review Copy, by the author, in return for a honest review. The is the first book in the Doctors of Darkness series. I really liked this gripping thriller. Interesting plot and the characters were well developed. I found this book hard to put down, since the story just pulled me in. This was a new to me author, and I will be reading more of Kane's books in the future. Entertaining read! - Sarah
