Erickson, Paul. Daily Life in a Covered Wagon.New York: Puffin Books. 1994. This is a wonderful book about what the journey was like for those traveling by covered wagon to the west. It is filled with primary sources and it includes quotes freom the diaries of the members of a family that actually traveled west. It ties in with the 5th grade History standards and can be used by the teacher as a supplement to the Oregon Trail standards. There are many pictures and illustrations. It covers all aspects of the journey from the beginning to the reaching of the final destination. It includes trail maps that chart the trail and a timeline of the history of travel west. Age Group: 9-12 years.
