CHAPTER 1

Galway, Ireland

January

Nothing was ever as it seemed.

There were more than humans walking this earth. The things seen out of the corner of your eye were real, even if your mind refused to recognize — or accept — them.

But Catriona Hayes knew of their existence, even if she wished she didn't. They were Fae. Magical creatures that were so beautiful they seemed otherworldly — because they were.

The Fae had come to this world, seamlessly integrating themselves into the lives of mortals. But then again, when it came to beings with magic, they could do such things.

Cat blew out a breath and put the day's earnings in the pouch before placing it inside the safe and shutting the door. She straightened and looked through the windows of the café and across the street to the pub alight with merriment.

There was a bit of wistfulness within her when she spotted three women walking into the bar with bright smiles. She'd never been that carefree.

From the first moment she could remember, her family had kept her apart from others. It wasn't until she was older that she realized what made her so different — she was a Halfling.

Part human, part Fae.

Some might rejoice at the news, but she wasn't most people.

The first time her grandfather had told her of her heritage, she'd laughed, thinking it was a jest. But as they'd walked down the streets of Galway, he began pointing out the Fae.

That was the day her life changed. At eight years old, she'd felt the weight of the world drop upon her shoulders. The burden had nearly brought her to her knees. And it had lingered, growing heavier with each passing year.

Yet she remained standing beneath it all. Only because of her grandfather. The man who smiled in the midst of the many storms life threw his way. He was what kept her composed and mindful of the dangers of living near Fae.

While she had been fearful of her grandfather's revelation, her older siblings had embraced it as a gift.

Cat looked down at the counter and the top that covered it. Beneath the thick glass, next to the register, was a picture of her with her brother and sister twenty years ago.

Whatever gift having Fae blood had given her siblings had been taken away in a cruel twist of Fate several months ago when they were savagely killed.

Her brother had been murdered in a crowded pub, while her sister had had her life snuffed out on a train to London. No one had seen either attack. One moment, her siblings had been alive. The next, they were dead. It was how Cat knew the Fae were responsible.

Only beings with magic and the ability to veil themselves could have committed such crimes without a single person catching something on their mobile phones.

Ever since her family's deaths, she'd been waiting for the Fae to come for her.

What was taking them so long? She and her grandfather — who she kept locked safely away in his cottage where no Fae could enter — were the only ones left.

A flash of lightning pulled her from her thoughts and reminded her that she needed to get home. She started toward the front, turning off the lights as she went. Flipping the sign in the café window to CLOSED, she walked out the door and locked it.

When she faced the street once more, she gripped the handle of her purse and looked around at the people. She knew the Fae could use glamour to disguise themselves, though most preferred to remain beautiful. That made it easier to pick them out, but it did nothing to lessen Cat's dread.

She remained in the doorway as a couple walked past her. The man said something to make the woman laugh. Cat's heart caught because she couldn't remember the last time she'd giggled like that — never mind actually being on a date.

Cat squared her shoulders and turned to the left. Her cottage was toward the outskirts of Galway. She couldn't wait to get home where she could relax.

"Relax," she snorted.

There was no such thing for her. While others brushed their cares away with a pint of ale and loud music, she would eat alone at her house and sleep with one eye open.

Being half-Fae had done nothing but make her life miserable. She'd gotten nothing else from it. Her sister, Nora, had been able to move objects with her mind. Her brother, Domhnall, could grow plants.

For some strange reason, magic had passed her over altogether. No matter how hard she tried, there didn't seem to be a smidgen of magic within her.

Countless times, she'd asked her grandfather what she'd done to not have magic. He'd never quite answered her. In his usual way, he would tell a story about all the Halflings who lived without magic.

But she always suspected that he was keeping something from her.

No amount of conniving or posing the question different ways ever gave her another answer, though. With every year that passed, she was more and more sure that her grandfather was hiding something.

Cat tensed when she walked past a Fae talking to a mortal female. His silver eyes, black hair, and sex appeal were the biggest clues to what he was — Light Fae. At least, it wasn't a Dark.

The Dark scared her the most with their red eyes. She shuddered just thinking about them.

She turned the corner and quickened her pace. Thunder rumbled the same time lightning zigzagged across the sky. More rain was on the way, but if she were lucky, she'd make it back to her cottage before it came.

Suddenly, she stopped. She didn't know what had caught her attention, but something told her to go no farther. Her gaze roamed down the street as people milled about.

There was something in the air that draped over everything like a wet blanket. It took her a moment to realize what it was — fear. She looked at the humans and saw that none of them appeared to be affected.

Then she heard the footsteps coming, quickly. She saw the man running toward her and looking back over his shoulder. He passed beneath a streetlamp, and she saw his eyes — red.

But it was the terror on his face that surprised her. She hadn't thought there was anything a Dark feared, but whatever was after this particular Fae must be frightening.

Her head told her to run, but her body refused to move. She remained where she was, even as a man appeared out of thin air in front of the Dark.

The Fae slid to a halt, his eyes wide. The man before him had long, white hair that was pulled away from his face by three small braids on each side of his head.

She had little time to process that before she saw the light glint off a blade. The sword sliced through the air and cut down the Dark, turning him to dust in an instant.

Shock reverberated through her as she involuntarily took a step back. What kind of weapon did he have that could kill a Fae?

Because she wanted one.

He took two steps away before he suddenly halted, his body stiffening. Then he gradually turned his head to look right at her. She couldn't make out his face because of the shadows, but she knew he'd seen her.

And then, he disappeared.

She took another step back and hastily looked around, but there was no other sign of the white-haired man. Yet she knew she wasn't alone.

He was there. She was sure of it. Just as she was sure the Fae would come for her soon.

Somehow, she managed to stand her ground. If she were going to die, she would do it with courage. Even if she was shaking. She wasn't going to run, no matter how much she wanted to.

She felt something behind her a moment before the sound of footsteps reached her. Cat whirled around, ready to face the unknown stranger. But it was a Dark Fae who walked toward her.

"Shite," she murmured and turned back around.

"Hiya, darlin'," the Dark called. "What's your hurry?"

She walked faster and said over her shoulder, "Long day."

"Let me buy you a drink."

"No, thanks."

She waited for him to say more, and when he didn't, she gave a sigh of relief. It wasn't until she was in her cottage that she slumped against the door.

Another day gone.

CHAPTER 2

Fintan stepped in front of the Dark, blocking his advance on the Halfling. "Leave her."

The Dark's red eyes flashed with anger. "I saw her first."

"I'm telling you to leave her. It's your last warning."

The Dark sneered. "Or what?"

"You die."

"Bugger off," he said and tried to push past Fintan.

Fintan called his sword to him. The Dark's eyes widened when he saw it. "I warned you," Fintan said right before he plunged the blade into the Fae's stomach.

At least this time, he was sure no one had seen him. With just a thought, his sword disappeared once more. How had he missed the redhead? He'd never made such a mistake before.

The night had started out good. There was something about hunting that eased his soul. When his quarry was as frightened and impulsive as the Dark Fae he'd been sent to kill, it was even better.

After Death had marked the Darks for dispatch, Fintan had eagerly left Scotland to walk the streets of Ireland once more. Though it had never been his home.

The Fae — both Light and Dark — claimed The Emerald Isle as their own. But for him, the only true home he'd ever known was with the other Reapers.

Fintan veiled himself once more and turned to watch the red-haired Halfling hurry away. Death had set explicit rules for the Reapers, and one was that no Fae could know who they were.

And if someone did see them, they had to die. He'd intended to kill the half-Fae, but when he'd stood behind her, it wasn't alarm or panic he sensed. It had been acceptance.

That single, simple emotion stopped him cold.

He was intrigued, and that surprised him. Perhaps it all came back to what had occurred with Eoghan. For just a second, Fintan allowed his anger to churn in his gut.

There were seven Reapers, but one of them was now gone. They didn't know where Eoghan was or how to find him. No matter how hard they'd searched, there was no sign of their brother.

All because of Bran.

As one of the original Reapers, Bran had broken Death's greatest rule and allowed a Light Fae to know of them, all because he'd been in love with her.

That love had cost the Light her life, which in turn had caused Bran to betray the other Reapers. The only ones who survived were Cael and Eoghan. Cael now led the Reapers.

It was during their last battle with Bran where everything had gone wrong. No matter how Fintan looked at it, he couldn't figure out how they could have stopped what happened.

They didn't know how Bran's magic was continuing to grow, rivaling that of Death's. Despite that, however, they'd nearly won the last battle, ending Bran's revenge once and for all. Help had come from one of the most legendary Light Fae of all time: Rhi.

As they'd battled each other, however, the mix of Bran's and Rhi's magic created a maelstrom, which began ripping the house apart. Bran had used the vortex, directing the energy at Cael, but Eoghan pushed Cael out of the way and was swallowed by the magic instead.

Each of the Reapers was devastated by the loss. More so because Bran had managed to get away in the aftermath.

Fintan hated that Death had wiped Rhi's memories of them. They could really use her help. But it was either erase all mention of the Reapers or kill Rhi.

His thoughts halted when he felt the first drops of rain land on his cheek. Ignoring the coming storm, Fintan found himself following the Halfling. Somehow, she'd escaped Bran's wrath as he and his men systematically hunted and killed every human with Fae blood.

Curious as to how she'd stayed alive, Fintan wanted to know more about her. Too many half-Fae had been wiped out, and he wasn't keen on eliminating another one.

He paused, curious about his thoughts — and feelings. Ever since Eoghan's disappearance, he'd had odd notions. He'd buried all of his feelings long ago, so to have them make themselves known now was disconcerting.

Extremely so.

Fintan continued on. It didn't take him long to find the Halfling. Her stone cottage was quaint. As he walked the perimeter, he was surprised to find that there were no markings used as wards against Fae There hadn't been shock in her gaze when she'd seen him. That indicated she knew what he was. Which also meant she knew she had Fae blood within her.

Why then didn't she ensure that her home couldn't be invaded?

He stood at the front, looking through the large window. The curtains were drawn, but there was a wide enough slit that he could see her standing in the kitchen, waiting for the kettle to boil. As soon as it did, she poured the water into her cup to make tea.

He watched the way her red hair fell in a thick curtain midway down her back. She moved gracefully as she walked to the sofa and curled up on it. He expected her to turn on the television, as most humans did.

Instead, she picked up a book and began to read. He studied her oval face, noting the delicate shape of her jaw before his gaze moved to her mouth.

Tempting. That's the first thought that came to mind as he looked at her full lips. His gaze moved upward to her cheekbones and her large eyes that were a vivid, emerald green.

The desire swirling within him was like a warning bell going off in his head, demanding he leave. He attempted to squash the feeling, but it was a halfhearted try. The craving, the hunger ... felt too damn good.

He couldn't remember the last time he'd experienced any sort of yearning. It kept him rooted to the spot, staring at a woman he could have no part of.

A Reaper pledged himself to Death. There could be no connections to family or friends, no lovers or any sort of relationships outside of the Reapers.

It had been Death's order from the very beginning. It was also something Fintan agreed with completely. A Reaper couldn't do his job if his thoughts were on others.

Yet, Death had altered her rule recently. Baylon had brought Jordyn into their group. Not long after, Kyran brought River, who now carried his child.

The most recent was Neve. She was the newest Reaper and lover to Talin.

Fintan didn't begrudge Jordyn and River being with them. They'd each brought something with them to help hunt Bran, and their being half-Fae was a plus.

But none of that altered his view of a Reaper loving someone. Love could be a dangerous emotion. He should know. He'd exploited it during his reign of terror with ruthless, brutal precision.

He turned when he heard something behind him and found two Light Fae watching the cottage. As the minutes passed, more Fae appeared. Dark and Light stood together, observing the redhead.

Now, more than ever, he wanted to know what it was about the Halfling that drew the interest of others. And if these Fae knew about her, how was it that Bran didn't? Or worse, did Bran know of her and had he allowed her to live?

If that were the case, Fintan needed to know everything there was to know about the woman.

With his decision made, he walked past the Fae and used glamour to change his hair to black and his eyes to silver. Then he dropped the veil and stared at the cottage.

It wasn't long before a female Light Fae stopped beside him. "I've not seen you here before."

He shrugged. "I normally spend my time in Dublin. What's going on?"

"That's Catriona Hayes."

He raised a brow. Obviously, he was supposed to know who this girl was. "Who?"

"Wow," the Light said with a laugh. "You must've been living under a rock. I thought everyone knew who the Hayeses were."

"Tell me," he urged.

She tucked her black hair behind an ear and looked to the cottage as she began. "They've had not one, but three Fae give them children over the last eight hundred years. Of all the Halflings, they are the most powerful."

If that were true, how had he never heard of them before? As of this moment, that would change.

"You watch her. Why?" Fintan asked.

Silver eyes turned to him. "We're waiting for her to die. The rest of her family has been killed. We think it's the Reapers since word has spread that they've returned."

It wasn't as if Fintan could tell her the Reapers had nothing to do with the Halfling deaths. "You think to get a look at a Reaper?"

"No. Well, perhaps," she said with a shrug. "We know her days are numbered, so we watch and wait."

"How ... morbid."

She shrugged indifferently. "It's the way of the mortals. Even ones with magic."

"Why not help her?"

The Light laughed, shaking her head of short, black hair. "Why would we want to do that?"

After the Fae had walked away, Fintan stepped back into the shadows and veiled himself, dropping the glamour at the same time.

The other Reapers would be waiting to hear from him. He should return to their compound on Inchmickery off the coast of Edinburgh, but he hesitated. In fact, each time he tried to leave, he found that he didn't want to.

Hours passed as Light and Dark came to have a look at Catriona. Even after all the lights were out and the mortal had found her bed for the night, the Fae still milled about in curiosity.

Dark Alpha’s Lover packs a punch. It’s sexy, exciting and fast-paced. Dark Alpha’s Lover by Donna Grant is another engrossing installment in her Reaper series. This is the fourth entry in the series which is connected to and running concurrently with her Dark Kings series. If you are a fan of her dragon kings, you need to be reading both series to fully understand all the behind-the-scenes political shenanigans going on. If you are not following either series, this tale can work as a stand alone as the romance and the danger plot herein are self-contained. I’m a fan of Donna’s works and am really enjoying both series. I greedily look forward to each new release - not only for the awesome story that will be told – but, also for any juicy tidbits she may disclose regarding my favorite characters and the story arc extending throughout the Reaper series and that of her Dark Kings. Dark Alpha’s Lover is the story of fae halfling Catriona 'Cat' Hayes and dark fae Fintan, a Reaper who works for Death. Reapers are in charge of ensuring the fae follow the rules. Both light and dark fae are taught as youngsters that they must follow the rules or suffer the consequences courtesy of the Reapers. In the series arc, Fintan and his fellow Reapers are in the midst of a war with Bran, a former spurned Reaper, who has somehow managed to weaken Death and who is targeting halflings. Up till this installment in the series, Fintan has never had an issue strictly following Death’s rules. Cat has experienced much tragedy in her life; her entire family has been wiped out by the fae and she fears that she is next even though she possesses no magic. When Cat witnesses Fintan killing a fae, she is fascinated as she did not think it possible to defend herself against a fae. Unfortunately, Fintan notices that Cat saw him snuffing out the fae and Death’s rules decree that, if they are spotted, they must also take out the witness. He follows her home only to find an atypical scene with a slew of fae outside her home keeping watch and decides to first investigate further how she’s managed to stay alive when others like her have fallen victim. Cat and Fintan are both likable and believable. Fintan is known for being unemotional as he’s never known any type of love in his life. Cat shakes his world as he finds himself caring about her and trusting her when he’s only ever trusted Death and his fellow Reapers. Cat is an enigma. She’s strong, resilient and brilliant with phenomenal puzzle-solving abilities. They share a common mission in that the rogue ex-Reaper needs to be taken out – Cat because he’s targeting her kind for extinction, and Fintan because he’s targeting Death and the balance in the Universe that the Reapers are sworn to maintain. I liked the dynamics between them, but can they trust each other enough to work together for a common goal? No spoilers – but, fans will be enthralled by the possible future ramifications of a quick walk-on by Dark Kings Constantine, Roman and Cain within. In addition, we also get to catch up with the other Reapers and Death, who rocks a ball gown. Who would have thought? Newbies will enjoy it and fans will inhale it. It really moves the plot with Bran forward and weaves in some Dark Kings’ intrigue too. If you enjoy paranormal urban fantasy romances with awesome characters and a well-plotted storyline, I’d encourage you to put this series on your radar. My full review is published at Reading Between the Wines Book Club.

Dark Alpha’s Lover is the next installment of Donna Grant’s Reaper series. In this one, Catriona Hayes, a halfling, has accepted that her days are numbered. After losing everyone in her family except her grandfather, it’s pretty obvious that her time has come. Fintan, a Reaper for Death, catches that beautiful woman has just seen him, a guaranteed death sentence. His curiosity peaked, rather than kill her, he’s determined to find out everything he can about her.   As with all of this author’s books, I really loved this story. I loved that there was more slight intertwining with her dragon series and the characters start to interact with each other. I enjoyed Cat’s character. Her determination and drive made it hard to put this book down. I thought that Fintan was a perfect match for her. I loved this story and the overall continuation of the series and look forward to the next one. I highly recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book

Ah, Fintan. My favorite Reaper. I think he's the most compelling and tortured of the Reapers, so far. Catriona Hayes was a halfling like no other halfling before. But no one knew why. If she was so different from other halflings why hadn't Bran knew about her before the Reapers? What was her allure to other Fae? Fintan decided to help keep Cat and her grandfather safe from the Dark Fae, until he could find out what the attraction was about them. It was so fascinating to read his reactions to his growing feelings for Cat, that he never experienced before, ever. He decided to to all these without passing the knowledge to the other Reapers. There were some pretty interesting reveals in this story. I don't want to give away any spoilers. I am addicted to Ms. Grant's Reapers series. I couldn't put it down until I finished. I was up until 2am. It's a great spin off the Dragon Kings. You won't be disappointed with this series. I highly recommend it! I was given a copy by NetGalley and volunteered to leave this review.

Donna grant dark alphas lover The 4th installment in the reaper series Fintan is one of deaths reapers, with his long white hair and white red rimmed eyes, sets him apart from all fae no matter that he is a reaper to do the bidding of death. Cat is a fiery green eyed ginger half fae with an act of saying what she feels, and let me tell you I love both of them. In this book Donna does a switch on us that had me screaming I love it....i love it. Oh the feels.... Boths back stories are full of loss, sadness, loneliness and regret but that doesn't stop our hero's from doing there part and finding each other. The added characters from the Dragon King books had me pause took me a second to come to terms with it and I was like oh the feels This is a absolute must read for any of her fans and new comers I'll just say you will get addicted...

So many authors start to run out of new material after years of writing but Author Donna Grant is not hat author. Her books continue to surround the reader with sharp details, intrigue, brokenness, redemption, evil, mystery, paranormal happenings and love. In this fourth book of A Reaper Novel series the Reaper Fintan takes center stage though the other Reapers make appearances as well as Death. Let me not forget to mention Constantine King of the Dragon Kings along with Roman and Cain from the Dragon Kings series also makes a cameo appearance in this book. I can't wait to see where that meeting leads in future books. Non-emotional Fintan trusts no one except Death and the other Reapers. He has never known anyone to just want to touch and love him because everyone feared him. It brought tears to my eyes the words written about this character. It is so hard to even imagine never being loved. The author did an outstanding job of portraying his strength while slowly exposing his weaknesses which caused this reader to fall deeply in love with his character. Would we be able to be as strong as Catriona? Losing loved ones, finances, and just waiting to die; forces some people to become more resilient or others to just give up and die. Catriona's personality was exciting, empowering, brave, and very well written. Her brain is amazing and she solves a puzzle that no one else guessed. It was quite brilliant in concept. This story is fast paced and full of exciting moments with some spiciness thrown in. For this reason I give it 5 STARS. Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Review For: Dark Alpha's Lover by Donna Grant 'Dark Alpha's Lover' by Donna Grant is book Four in the "Reaper" series. This is the story of Catriona 'Cat' and Fintan. Fintan and his fellow friends are also in middle of fighting a war with a spurned Reaper. Cat is a hafling which is half human and half fae. Cat and her grandfather know some of what a Fae is and what to look for in others. But they don't seem to know all as her brother and sister have been killed. Now Cat thinks they will come for her next. Cat happens to witness Fintan killing a Fae which she didn't think was possible. Now she is intrigued by him and a way to kill Fae. Fintan does spot Cat after his killing and the rules are that if spotted is is to kill that person. But Cat seems to draw him in and he doesn't want to hurt her. When he follows her home he sees allot of Fae's outside her home that are just watching her. He finds that there is something odd going on with her still being alive but not fallen victim to being killed as so many have in the past. This was another exciting paranormal romance read from Ms. Grant. This book is near impossible to put down! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read.

A Reaper and a Halfling cross paths… This is the fourth book in the Reaper series. Once a dark Fae until he was betrayed and died, Fintan is now a Reaper. Death was waiting for him, strengthened him and set him on a new path as an assassin policing his kind. He’s a unique Fae in looks, fully white haired with white eyes rimmed with red. Coming upon the Fae watching a Halfling makes him curious, he comes to learn about her from those who watch. Halflings are being killed making this one a target the Reapers can use to bring out their enemy Bran. But the way this Halfling conducts herself impresses him, she does not hide, she faces what’s coming with courage and dignity. Emotions are foreign to Fintan, he buried them a long time ago yet feelings stir within him for this Halfling. Catriona (Cat) Hayes walks between two worlds being a Halfling, never a part of either one. There’s something about her human line that draws the Fae for they have visited more than once, the children of those encounters born with magical abilities but not so for Cat, the magic passed her by or so she was led to believe not being able to conjure any though she’s tried. Her last living relative is the grandfather she adores who protects her in ways she doesn’t know. The Fae watch her to see what will happen, to see who will come to kill her and she waits for those who killed her siblings. She doesn’t hide to protect her grandfather and she’ll fight if given the chance to. Cat strikes a deal with a different looking Fae who she saw kill another, a magical weapon for being bait to get the one who killed her family, the Reaper’s enemy. This Halfling truly has a warrior’s soul and has gained the devotion of one of Death’s assassins. The tables are turned when the enemy doesn’t do what’s expected and Cat unexpectedly comes into her own as a result of it. Bran wants the Halfling for something and the Reapers need to figure out why quickly. Having the one thing that means anything to Cat threatened puts her in a tough position, betray the one who has already been betrayed, the one who has helped her and that she’s come to feel for or pay a deadly price. Two lonesome souls made a deep connection but can they keep it? This was a great paranormal read, an intriguing imaginative storyline that crosses books, much action and suspense, and captivating characters. Fintan and Catriona are a perfect match, two who’ve walked the world alone with lonesomeness their truest companion find what’s been missing in each other. This was my first time reading this series, starting with book four, yet I was able to follow the continued plot, the author provided enough information on past occurrences as they are referred to enabling the reader to understand how said events relate to the present. This book is set in the same world as the Dragon Kings series which I have been following, will definitely be reading the prior books. An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley.

Great addition to this series. The read is fast paced with lots of suspense and drama. Cat’s story is an emotional one and she is a very strong character. Fin himself knows a lot of pain and grief and the chemistry between these two is amazing. This read definitely transports you to a different world and I was hooked from beginning to end. I loved it!

This was a great book that packs one giant punch. You will find this packed with action and an edge of your seat plot. While this is the latest in the Reapers series it crosses with her Dragon Kings series so should not be missed as we find out more clues.

Donna Grant adds another great book to her Reaper Series ! Donna Grant writes some of the best paranormal/urban fantasy romance that I've ever read. Her books never disappoint but this one really stands out for me because I liked the characters so much. Cat was strong, courageous, and unique. She had lost her entire family and still she never once backed down from Bran. Fintan was totally broken or so it seemed until Cat came along. The reasons why he fought his feelings for so long just broke my heart. Their story is one of love, hope, trust and family. Donna Grant put this story together beautifully and even managed to throw in a few secrets and surprises. The characters were wonderful ! I loved Cat and Fintan. I enjoyed everything about their romance. Now I am left wondering which Reaper will get the next book. Eoghan is still missing so maybe it will be him. I'm already eager for his story especially after the shocking part at the end.

I hadn’t realised this is the fourth book in a series when I requested and read it but I have to say, it still worked well even though I hadn’t read any of the earlier books. In this fantasy world there are Light and Dark Fae, humans, halflings and, the elite Death’s assassins who are the immortal Reapers. In this story Fintan is the Reaper who is carrying out an assassination when he is spotted by the half-human, half-Fae Catriona. He’s amazed when she doesn’t panic at the sight, standing, facing him and apparently both unafraid and resigned to her own fate. He discovers that her parents and siblings have all been killed and she’s assuming she will be next….. This is an intriguing paranormal romance with strong alpha males and a feisty, strong, independent and mysterious female lead. It is an action packed story during which the author cleverly reveals aspects of the previous stories so the reader doesn’t feel like they’re missing any key information. The fantasy world is robustly constructed and great to escape into. The war that is happening is presumably the main thread running through the series and the protagonists are superbly portrayed. The romance develops well and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in the series in future! I requested and received a copy of this book via NetGalley without any obligation. This is my honest opinion after reading the story.

The first words that came to my mind after reading this book was IT CAN’T BE OVER!! (The Book, not the series) Donna Grant has such a gift of storytelling that I can read her books over and over again. I’m adding this one to my list. Catriona Hayes is half Fae. She has lost every person in her family with the exception of her grandfather who she keeps hidden away in a seaside cottage. Away from Fae eyes. She has no idea why they have spared her and constantly looks over her shoulder, sure her time is near. Then Fintan comes into the picture. Fintan is a Reaper with a horrible history. Look up tortured hero and his picture should be there. Due to this past he has completely shut down his emotions, even to his fellow Reapers. I read this book in one sitting. The intensity level is off the charts. This series has now reached the level of the Dragon Kings (Dark Kings) which I wait for each new release with great anticipation. It comes complete with addicting characters you want to revisit book after book to suspense that will keep you glued to the page. And of course the HEA. And oh the revelations that pertain to the Dragon King world! I'm not one for spoilers so I'll leave it at that. I received a copy from the publisher for my honest review at Celtic Dragon Book Reviews

I absolutely adore Fintan! I just smile thinking about him! I have been dying for his book and finding out why he is the way he is! He is so different from the other Reapers! He is set apart by not only his white hair and red eyes, his life in general. He was the most feared of all the Dark Fae and is still talked about as one of the most deadly among his kind. He was sold to Tarreth, the King of the Dark Fae at a young age to be his slave, trained to be his most lethal assassin, until Tarreth himself feared Fintan and ultimately betrayed him. Fintan never knew what family was until he was given the chance to become a Reaper. They are his brothers. They are the keepers of the balance between good and evil. Together they are battling an enemy set to destroy all that they have fought for. By chance he meets Catriona Hayes. She is a Halfling. Part human and part Fae. Her family is known for being special because it's uncommon that three Fea visited her mother and left her with 3 halfling children. Growing up Cat never exhibited any gifts like her siblings had, so why now was she on the radar of an evil Fae named Bran seeking to destroy anything and everything in his path for vengeance. Fintan learned long ago to turn off his emotions and for the first time in his long life, Cat is opening him up. Will their love be strong enough to break down the walls Fintan has firmly cemented around his heart. All the while danger is at every turn and Bran wants Cat for himself. Fintan will do everything he can to keep her alive, but Catriona Hayes may have more power than she realizes!! Don't miss this book! It was so good! We also find out more clues that fit into the Dragon Kings and what's happening in their world!

Interesting read. This book is another book in the series about the reapers. Anyway, Dark Alpha's Lover is Fintan and Catriona's story. This book is full of surprises and interesting. So many things that happened that blew my mind. Overall, this book is a good read. It can be read as a standalone book but I advice to read the books in order to understand the story of the reapers more clearly (if you are new to the series).

DARK ALPHA’S LOVER is the fourth installment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult REAPER paranormal/fantasy romance series. The REAPERS is a spin off from Donna’s DARK KINGS series which is a spinoff from Donna’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. You do not have to have read any of the previous series to understand the premise but many of the events overlap with the events of the Dark Kings. This is Reaper Fintan, and half-fae/half human Catriona Hayes’s story line. SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death (aka Erith), on their own deathbed, to do her bidding-Death is the judge and jury; the Reapers are the executioners. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. All Reapers must follow two rules: never to fall in love; and never to reveal their existence to anyone. If you have read Donna’s DARK KINGS series you will recognize the familiarity between the two series as both follow a similar plot and premise including betrayal by one of their own. Told from several third person perspectives DARK ALPHA’S LOVER follows Reaper Fintan as he is tasked with protecting and gathering information about the half-fae Catriona Hayes. Cat believes she has not been blessed with the gift of magic but circumstances begin to unfold that reveal more about Cat’s abilities than anyone could ever have imagined. Cat is being stalked by Bran- a former Reaper with revenge on his mind, revenge aimed at the Reapers and the woman known as Death. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Fintan and Cat, and the discovery about the who and what of Bran’s plans for the Reapers he once called friends. The relationship between Cat and Fintan is forbidden by Reaper law-a law that once saw the destruction of Bran’s lover-a death he has chosen to avenge at all costs. Fintan knows that to fall in love could mean death to the woman that calls to his heart but Death knows that the world is changing, and along with, so too, are the Reapers who do her bidding. The $ex scenes are limited, seductive and compelling. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including all seven of the current line of Reapers, as well as several individuals from some of Donna’s other connected series and story lines including a number of the Dark Kings including King Constantine, and Balladyn-one time Captain of the Queen’s Guard, a famed warrior in the Light Army, and now a member of the Dark. Balladyn’s purpose throughout both of the series is increasing in relevance along with the Light Fae Rhi. DARK ALPHA’S LOVER is a story of family and love; betrayal and revenge; magic and power. The cross over between the Dark Kings and the Reaper’s series is revealing, and the connection between the two enemies may be closer than we think as both are avenging the loss of someone they loved. The premise is imaginative, revealing and engaging; the characters are dynamic and courageous; the romance is passionate. DARK ALPHA’S LOVER takes the reader closer to a supernatural war where everyone will lose, in the end.

There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you… I answer to no one but Death. I am impenetrable, impervious, immortal. I exist to do Death’s bidding and no one–not Reaper nor human nor Fae–can stand in my way. Except for the bewitching half-Fae, Catriona. She swears the magic in her family passed her by, but I know better. This woman is strong. This woman is powerful. And when her abilities surge forth, no one will be able to stop the Dark Fae from coming for her. Except for me. I want to keep her close. I want to keep her safe. I want lose myself to her, again and again… Review: Let me start by saying I keep doing this. This is story #4 in the series and I have not read the others before. I did catch on quickly and though it has a continuing storyline going through the series you could read it as a stand alone, though for reading enjoyment read in order. That being said I really liked the idea and execution of this story. The idea that Reapers and Fae co-exist and are at odds without humans being any the wiser was very fun to read. I was super sad for Cat losing all her family. She is strong character though and fights back against those out to get her. I also liked that there is more than meets the eye with Cat. I also really liked broody Fintan, he is dark, sexy and mysterious. This is a short book so I won't give away the story or plot points. What I will say this is a dark, sexy, exciting romance. I was caught up in the story from the beginning to the end and should appeal to lots of people. 4Stars *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*

I loved this book!! You can never go wrong with a Donna Grant book and this one is absolutely no exception! This book is about the Reaper Fintan and Catriona a halfing. Right from the start is drew me in and I couldn't put it down. There is action, heartbreak, but in the end so much love! Fintan is very repressed due to what happened to him from him being a child all the way to an adult. He is confused as to what is happening to him but thankfully understands it's not a bad thing. Catriona always believed that even as a halfing that she never inherited any magic, but soon finds out different. I loved their story, and all the details that go along with it. I loved how they talk about characters and events from the Dark Kings series, and one comment definitely made me go OOOOHHH!!! I can't wait to see if it's brought up in the other series, and what kind of repercussions it may have! This book is a definite must read in my opinion!

Loving this series though I'm so ready for Bran to get a butt whopping he'll never forget just once. Cat is so incredibly powerful I'd love to have her powers. Fintan has such a big heart.

4th installment in The Reapers Novel is the story of Fintan and Catriona. While these can be read as a standalone, I wouldn't suggest it. Each character is continued on to the next book. Each installment are about one of the Reapers finding their mate while in the middle of fighting a war with a spurned Reaper. Reapers work for Death who is named Elith. Fae are not allowed to know about the existence of Reapers so when Bran told his mate, a Fae, that he was a Reaper Elith killed her, hence the start of the war. Bran wants revenge on Elith. He is amassing enough power to attempt to take over and become the new leader of the Reapers, but first he must eliminate Elith. Catriona, a hafling, has become a pawn for Bran to get to Elith, but the Reapers do not know why or how Catriona can be used. Fintan is determined to find out. What he wasn't expecting was to fall for Catriona. He was once the most powerful assissin for the Dark Fae. He has always been able to stifle his emotions to do what needs to be done, until Cat. I have not read the first two books in the series so I don't know if it's revealed why there is the rule that Fae can not know of the existence of Reapers. I wonder if Elith regrets this rule since it did start the war that has caused a lot of casualties. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes and how it will change the way the Reapers are ruled. 4 - "Then I met you..." Stars! The fourth book in Donna Grant’s Reaper series finally gives us Fintan’s story. The quiet one of the group has definitely got more about him that we have seen so far, and it was good to get into this Fae’s head. And I liked that his story was very focused on him and the woman he falls for Cat Hayes; a Halfling herself, she is dealing with the loss of most of her family through Bran’s Dark Army, but the reasons as to why he has directed his attention on her are less than clear at the beginning of the book. A Reaper couldn’t do his job if his thoughts were on others… I liked that the story between the Reapers and Bran played out a little bit more in the telling of Fintan and Cat’s coming together as well as the author giving a little bit more on the changing feelings between Erith and Cael. Although relatively shore books there is certainly a lot packed into them. "I’ve never seen a fae like you…" "Because there is no other like me." I am really enjoying this series, I must admit the little glimpses you get of characters from the authors Dark Kings books is making me want to delve into their stories as well, but there is definitely more to come for the Reapers and their battle with Bran, with Eoghan’s capture still very much unresolved, and the unmatched men still to meet their women as the bigger picture plays out. I can’t find any information as to when the next installment of this series is due for release, I hope that it isn’t too long a wait as it has really got some momentum going now and I am looking forward to seeing how the author plays everything out in the last few books.
