About the Author

Anne Hobbs Purdy (1908-1987) was an American writer.

Born in the back country of Prownington, Missouri, she was a teacher in Oregon in 1927 when, at the age of 19, she received an offer to move to Alaska to teach. She went on to teach in many places, such as Franklin Creek (3 years), Chenin (1 year), Tetlin Indian Village or reservation, Dot Lake and Eagle (6 to 7 years).

She taught in the desert in California at 29 Palms, and then back in Chicken, Alaska, to teach the local children there.

Purdy was also an assistant to the Postmaster, managed a road house in Eagle, Alaska and started the Eagle Library. She married Fred Purdy in Eagle and together they adopted 10 children.

Her published works include “Dark Boundary” (1954) and “Tisha” (1976), the latter being the name given to her by a local native boy in Chicken who didn’t speak English very well, and instead of “Teacher” called her “Tisha.”

She died in 1987 and is buried next to her husband on their homestead in Chicken, Alaska.
