Cara, a city girl from up north, has just moved to the small town of Fayette, Alabama with her family. Helping her adjust to the culture is a self-sufficient local boy named Bryant. As Cara and Bryant's relationship starts to deepen, the town begins to suffer from random outbreaks of extreme violence. As the inhabitants die and return as flesh-eating abominations, the young couple is on the run. No place is safe as they seek out other survivors in an attempt to stave off their own grisly deaths. Eventually, a small group fortifies a church in a desperate siege against an ever-growing army of walking dead.

If you are a zombie fan this is the book for you. I loved it, and couldn't put it down! The author really sucks you in with such detail that you can imagine you are there surviving in a town that's gone crazy. It was great! Oh....and for the ladies there is a great love story that I was not expecting when I decided to read this book. I really feel in love with the characters. They took me back to when I was a teen in love. So all around great book! Love, adrenaline, crime, gore, and twists that you wouldn't expect. I'm really hoping for more great reads like this from James Layton.

When I first set eyes on Darkest Days: A Southern Zombie Tale, I thought I was looking at another cheesy zombie novel. But from the moment I read about the zombie grandma with no teeth gumming her prey, I knew I had something special! The author does a great job of balancing romance, humor, action, and gore. Every scene is painted for the reader in great detail. He doesn't shy away from describing the gore in excruciating detail, describing what happens to bones, blood, and innards. On that note, younger or more sensitive readers aren't this book's target audience. There are other mature details in the book as well. Most impressively, the author presents an intertwining story of a half dozen characters in such a way that you continually want to know what happens next with each one. Overall, a great read that you won't want to put down once you start.

the story takes place in a typical small town except it has zombies! I liked it. The story has has young love, parental rebellion, and lots of gross zombies, but its a good read.

Overall I did enjoy this book. It was well written and interesting. After reading many, many pages of the book I began to wonder if I was reading a zombie tale or not. It took way to long to come to the zombie part.

Not a bad story, nothing extraordinary but if you like zombie/apocalyptic stories this is fairly entertaining. A little weak on the actual apocalyptic nature of the event, but interesting none the less.

I'm not much of one for graphic gore and the like, so I've never even read a zombie novel before this one. I only picked this up at a friend's behest. I decided to give it through the first chapter then decide whether to press on or not. I was surprised to find a captivating and well delivered story that connected me emotionally to the characters. It's got a lot of gore, don't get me wrong, and there were a few awkward turns of phrase, all of which is why I'm only giving 4 out of 5 stars. But, overall, it was definitely an interesting read. I'd recommend it to my friends that don't mind the gore and language.

Generally good story and characters but slow to get to the zombies. I would consider this book to be Young Adult fiction due to the story line. There is a lot of first love and looking for love during the tale. There were a few situations where I wondered what the characters were thinking such as no one trying to call outside the town for help even though there was a working phone in the building. Overall, keeps your interest.

Hard to believe this is this young author's first effort. Great descriptive writing...I swear I kept smelling sweat, sex or blood, all the way through this horrifying, character driven, action read.

I LOVED IT! I felt like the book was more than a zombie tale..all towns are full of people just existing, going through the motions of life like the zombies do in the end of the book. hope to see more of this author.
